Nominations sought for service awards

The Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service recognizes one or more staff or faculty members who you feel embody Pastor Trachte's enthusiasm, support, involvement, dedication, and overall commitment to Wartburg's mission of service. Nominate staff and faculty that you believe deserve the Trachte Award before the Nov. 11 deadline.

 

The St. Elizabeth Award for Service recognizes members of the Wartburg community that have exemplified a commitment to service. Nominate students that you believe deserve the St. Elizabeth's Award before the Nov. 11 deadline.

Glove drive brings in 446 pairs

The glove drive held in connection with the inauguration of Dr. Rebecca Neiduski, a certified hand therapist, collected:

 

154 pairs of winter gloves.
107 pairs of work gloves.
185 pairs of latex gloves.


The glove will be distributed through Service Trips and Knights Who Serve for use or for donation to a local nonprofit organization. Cash donations that were received will be used to purchase additional gloves.

Horn/electronic artist to perform Nov. 2
Horn and electronics performer/composer Brian Kavolius-Matherne will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Orchestra Hall of the Bachman Fine Arts Center. Kavolius-Matherne has performed with orchestras across the country and combines his love of electronics, photography, and music into a unique concert experience. He will answer questions from the audience following the performance.
Reminder: FAFSA can be filed now

You can now file your 2023-24 Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Please only use the Federal Student Aid website to complete your FAFSA. You will need your student FSA ID as well as a parent’s ID if you are a dependent student. The Financial Aid Office highly recommends using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. If you do not qualify to use the tool, be sure to use 2021 income/tax information. Call 319-352-8262 or email finaid@wartburg.edu for assistance, which is always free.

New gallery exhibit documents climate change

“Where It Used to Be Blue” by Rachel Moser is now on display in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery. Moser’s work is an ongoing study of climate change and humans’ impact on the planet. This exhibition, which includes video and sound, is a result of Moser’s 2019 research expeditions where she witnessed the blue glaciers of the Arctic turning into rubble and soot and the surrounding remote islands being polluted with plastic.

A closing reception and gallery talk with the artist will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on the final day of the exhibit, Dec. 15. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Safety Penguin offers tips for winter
With winter approaching, safety is a top priority for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus. Sir Victor met up with Safety Penguin recently for a video about ways to stay safe when winter weather arrives.
Volunteer Action Center changes name
The Volunteer Action Center is now known as Knights Who Serve. Knights Who Serve is committed to its mission to inspire students to form a lasting bond with the communities in their lives, while learning and living out the value and importance of serving others. Be on the lookout for upcoming events!
MCSP Department Seminar to spotlight actuarial careers
The next Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Science Center 134. Rachel Ndjuluwa ’21 and Kelly Uwanjye ’22 will present virtually about their work at Cigna and current employment opportunities there. All are invited to hear their presentation, “Cigna Actuarial Executive Development Program and Wartburg Collaboration.” A randomly selected audience member will win a test subscription membership to Coaching Actuaries Adapt, good for 30-day access for the P and FM exams and 45-day access for other exams.
Dining Services seeks feedback through survey
The annual Dining Customer Satisfaction Survey is now available. An email will be sent out with information about how to complete the brief online survey. Your feedback will help identify ways to improve the dining experience at all dining locations. Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Decorate Halloween cookies at Student Success Center
Students are welcome to decorate cookies and enjoy Halloween treats in the Student Success Center today. The event begins at 11 a.m. and will last until the cookies are gone.
Society of Physics Students to sell T-shirts
The Wartburg Society of Physics Students is selling science T-shirts for $15 with the nearby design. There is a signup form outside Dr. Ben Bousquet’s office, or you can email ben.bousquet@wartburg.edu with a shirt size.
Pre-Veterinary Club sets November meeting
A special guest from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine will speak at the Pre-Veterinary Club’s November meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 30. All are welcome to join this event at 7 p.m. in Science Center 134. Please email pre.vet@wartburg.edu with any questions.
Service Trips sets Candlelight Dinner
Service Trips will host a Candlelight Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16. Everyone is invited, whether you’ve been on a service trip or not, to learn more about the program. The food served will represent previous service trip destinations.

Weekday Chapel services
Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Mondays feature faculty and staff faith stories and blessings, Wednesdays include Holy Communion to which all are welcome, and Fridays have Senior Chapels.

Sanctuary on Wednesdays

Sanctuary is a casual service that takes place Wednesday nights. All are welcome to relax and center themselves around God’s word in the midst of their busy weeks. Service begins at 9 p.m. in Chapel Commons, lower level, with snacks served beforehand at 8:45.

PROFESSIONAL NEWS

Promotions and new job titles

Dr. Michaeleen Golay has been named the assistant dean for academic innovation, and Dr. Michael Gleason is the new associate dean for graduate studies. Together, they will convene the newly created Academic Innovation Think Tank. Both will continue to teach in their respective areas.

 

Golay will review and clarify policies, processes, and procedures for new undergraduate program development in collaboration with academic departments; identify new undergraduate academic opportunities; and support existing program reviews to support student success and create competitive advantage, among other things.

 

Gleason will develop policies and procedures for graduate program development in collaboration with academic department; develop processes and procedures for graduate recruitment and admission and to facilitate graduate student success; and develop infrastructure to administer graduate programs, among other duties.

Achievements and accomplishments
Zefanias Ngove, Chaitrali Reddy, and Gretchen Guetzlaff presented their summer research completed with Dr. Sean T. Coleman at the 82nd annual American Society of Microbiology North Central Branch Conference at Grinnell College. Their poster was titled “Isolation, Characterization, and Host Range of Novel Microbacterium foliorum Bacteriophages.” Halle Van Roekel and Rainy Kock also presented a poster on their published research, “Discovery and Characterization of Microbacterium foliorum Bacteriophage ‘Burgy.’”

 

IINspire sent four students to attend the SACNAS National Diversity in STEM conference in Puerto Rico over fall break. SACNAS, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, serves to equip, empower, and energize participants for their academic and professional paths in STEM. Pedro Martinez Jr. (fourth-year, neuroscience), Hidaly Hernandez (fourth-year, neuroscience and Spanish), Robby Munoz (third-year, biochemistry), and Jennifer Miranda (fourth-year, actuarial science) attended the conference with Dr. Michaeleen Golay.

 

Chloe Zierke will also present on Ioponics at the 2022 Iowa Agriculture in the Classroom Learning Conference on Nov. 17 in West Des Moines along with Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 and Michaela Dehli.

Bussie receives Graven Award

Jacqueline Bussie, an award-winning author, professor, theologian and advocate for justice, received Wartburg College’s annual Graven Award on Monday, Oct. 24 during Weekday Chapel.

 

Her books include “Outlaw Christian: Finding Authentic Faith by Breaking the Rules,” which won the 2017 Gold Medal Illumination Award for Christian Living, and “Love Without Limits: Jesus’ Radical Vision for a Love with No Exceptions,” which has been recognized with the Readers’ Favorite Bronze Medal International Book Award for Christian Living and the 2020 IAN Outstanding Religion Book of the Year Award.

 

The Graven Award, now in its 33rd year, honors one “whose life is nurtured and guided by a strong sense of Christian calling and who is making a significant contribution to community, church and society.”

Free workout class planned at The W

The W will offer a Saturday morning class weekly with a rotating schedule from 8:30-9:20 a.m. beginning Nov. 5. This class will be free to all faculty, staff, and students. The schedule:

Achievements and accomplishments
Dr. Samantha Larimer Bousquet, professor of biology, accompanied six students to the annual Midbrains Conference in Eau Claire, Wis, on Oct. 22: Pedro Martinez ’23, Jenna Smuszkiewicz ’23, Jordan Swiatkowski ’23, Tsering Tashi ’23, Liz Ashing ’24, and Robert Al Khoury '24. Martinez presented his poster, “Enlarged Perivascular Spaces in Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Characterization with 7T MRI and Relationship with Neurobehavioral Outcome,” research he completed this summer at the University of Illinois – Carle Hospital. Smuszkiewicz presented their poster, “Synaptic Gene RNAi Knockdown Effects on Behavioral Homeostasis in Drosophila,” research they conducted last year at Wartburg with Bryce Butler ’22, Aaron Frohner ’22, Gianna Witmer ’23, and Dr. Stephanie Toering Peters, professor of biology. Travel was supported by Undergraduate Research and IINspire.

 

Dr. Karolina Achirri has joined the editorial board and will serve as a reviewer for The Qualitative Report, a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal. She will provide expertise on qualitative research methodology, intercultural communication, language identities and ideologies, and international education.

 

Dr. Michael Gleason, the Irving R. Burling Distinguished Professor in Leadership, recently facilitated two concurrent sessions at the International Leadership Association Conference in Washington, D.C. He co-facilitated a workshop, “Co-Inquiry: An Approach to Co-Creating Wisdom in Challenging Times,” and participated in a panel, “Developing Wise Leaders in Graduate and Professional School Settings.”

 

Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 will present Ioponics at the 2022 Iowa Agriculture in the Classroom Learning Conference on Nov. 17 in West Des Moines. He will present with Michaela Dehli about the continuing educational work and research that started on the Wartburg College campus. Ioponics systems are now in 250 classrooms and 70 counties across Iowa.

 

Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 and Noah Christians ’21 will present their continued research into biophilia in the classroom at the 2022 National Association of Biology Teachers’ National Conference in Indianapolis from Nov. 10-13. The presentation is titled “Biophilia Effects on Long-Term Concept Retention, Academic Achievement, and Intrinsic Motivation in Secondary Science Classrooms.”

 

Tim Wengenack presented his economics research paper, “Does COVID-19 Influence Inflation in the United States,” at the Missouri Valley Economic Association Conference in St. Louis on Oct. 7. He was accompanied by his faculty adviser, Dr. Nana Quaicoe, assistant professor in economics and the James Leach Chair in Banking and Monetary Economics. Using a vector-autoregression model and impulse response functions, Wengenack found a statistically significant positive relationship between COVID-19 cases and the inflation rate, although there was a noticeable lag.

 

On Oct. 8, education students Jack Bevans, Alex Holden, Haley Jacobsen, and Kearstin Hansel represented Wartburg College at the North Central STEAMfest held at Iowa Central Community College. On Oct. 27, education students Cassidy Staudt, Taylor Runchey, Cora Saunders, and Chloe Nixon will present science lessons at the Northeast Iowa Family STEM Festival held in Manchester.

 

Dr. Suleman Abdiah, visiting assistant professor of business administration, presented a paper, “Macroeconomic Drivers of the Total Factor Productivity: Case Study From Pakistan,” at the Missouri Valley Economic Association Conference in St. Louis from Oct. 6-8.
