Centennial Complex renamed Ubuntu Center

Centennial Complex, comprising Centennial, Vollmer, and Hebron halls, has been renamed the Ubuntu Center as an affirmation of the college’s shared commitment to diversity. Ubuntu, an African philosophy often translated to “I am, because we are,” also has deep meaning in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

In addition to renaming the Complex, the Board of Regents also approved the renaming of Centennial Hall to Slife Hall in honor of Harry and Polly Slife, who were advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the Cedar Valley prior to their deaths in 1994.

Meacham challenges preconceptions at professional development

Following Friday’s announcement regarding the new Ubuntu Center, Dr. Shuaib Meacham, an associate professor at the University of Northern Iowa, facilitated two professional development presentations. “Black Panther and Black Excellence” and “Ubuntu, Interdependence in an Era of Pandemic and Preparation for Global Leadership” challenged preconceptions that associate blackness with a deficit and encouraged our employees to consider ways they can intentionally build community.

If you were unable to attend the event, a recording is available online for your convenience.

Departments and offices are encouraged to spend time thinking about the questions Dr. Meacham posed during the second presentation to find ways to thread the ubuntu philosophy into your everyday work:

What does the practice and identity of your position look like as an expression of interdependence?
What does the learning relationship between Wartburg and Cedar Valley look like as an expression of ubuntu?
Explore student loan debt forgiveness

The public service loan forgiveness program offers student loan forgiveness for Direct Loan borrowers who work full-time in public service jobs and have a remaining balance after 10 years. Due to a limited waiver, borrowers may receive credit for partial or late payments that would not normally qualify them for forgiveness.

If you think you might qualify for loan forgiveness under the waiver, be sure to apply before it expires Oct. 31. You can learn more about the qualifications on the Info Center and apply for forgiveness at studentaid.gov.
