Next week is Philanthropy Week at Wartburg! Students UKnight will be tabling in the Student Center every day with fun events and activities to promote and educate the Wartburg community about philanthropy.
To kick off Philanthropy Week, join us Mon. Feb. 14 in the Knights Room (Mensa) from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a Q&A session with Wartburg alumni Renee Voves '04 and Jay Boeding '99 to discuss, "What is Philanthropy?".

Josh Fischer, co-ed eSports coach, is hosting an informational meeting about the college's newest varsity athletic team on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., in the McCoy Rooms in Saemann Student Center. All are welcome to attend. The eSports team will begin official competition in 2022-23, likely in Rocket League and Valorant, though other titles are possible depending on interest.

Campus Race to Zero Waste

The annual Campus Race to Zero Waste competition has begun! For the next eight weeks Wartburg is competing against other schools both in the state and across the nation to compare how well we recycle and divert our total waste from landfills. Please make an effort to live sustainably and mindfully for not only the next eight weeks but beyond! Social Justice in our Communities event with Waterloo Mayor Hart

Join the Student Social Justice Council and Black Student Union on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum, to listen to Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart talk about his experiences as the first Black mayor of Waterloo, as well as how he enacts social justice in his work. There will be introductory speakers from the Social Justice Council and BSU, as well. This will be an amazing night of learning how social justice initiatives are at work in our communities.

Disability and Ableism: Beyond 'Inspiration'

Dr. Rachel Clark, associate professor of English, Scholars Program director, and faculty-in-residence, will be speaking to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. "Disability and Ableism: Beyond 'Inspiration'" will be available to faculty, staff, and students over Zoom. In this session, Clark will introduce the viewers to basic principles of disability studies, explore evolving terminology, and discuss common experiences among people with disabilities. MCSP Department Seminar: Research in Applied Mathematics
|
The next Math, Computer Science & Physics (MCSP) Department Seminar will be Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 11:30 a.m., in Science Center 134. Samuel Van Fleet ’17, a graduate student in applied mathematics at Iowa State University, will speak about his doctoral research in a talk entitled, "Modeling radiative transfer using numerical methods." Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Mondays will feature faculty and staff faith stories and blessings, Wednesdays will be a morning prayer service, and Fridays will have Senior Chapels. Interfaith chapels will be held during the last week each month.

On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Wartburg Chess Club finished in first place in the Under 1400 category at the 2022 Iowa Collegiate Chess Championship. Incomplete grade deadline for students Feb. 7
|
Students with incomplete grades for Fall 2021 courses must submit all course work to instructors by Monday, Feb. 7. Instructors must submit grade changes for incomplete grades to the Registrar’s Office by Monday, Feb. 14. If a grade change is not submitted by the deadline, the incomplete grade will be changed to an “F” which will then be computed into the student’s cumulative grade point average.

The Hearthside Project offers faculty and students the unique opportunity to connect outside the formality of the classroom. Students receive their books free of charge. Because of the vacancy in the Production Manager position, tech support for events on campus is being handled by the student crew. With the number of events they cover, it is important to understand the service level expectation for that area. Please have all requests for tech support at events submitted at least three weeks ahead of the event to guarantee student staff coverage. No changes for tech support requirements will be accepted less than two weeks from the start of the event. To avoid miscommunication, messages should not be sent directly to student managers, except during the actual event.

OSHA vaccine/testing mandate update
|
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration withdrew its vaccination and testing emergency temporary standard effective Jan. 26. OSHA is putting focused effort on finalizing a permanent COVID-19 Health Standard, but that will take some time to be developed and approved. For now, we will continue to encourage all students, faculty, and staff to get vaccinated if they can and to continue wearing face masks indoors in accordance with Wartburg policies.
|
The Wartburg Volunteer Action Center would like to thank all the students, faculty, and staff who participated in the MLK Day events on Monday, Jan. 17. Between all of the events, there were approximately 415 participants who attended. This includes our service in the Waverly community serving with a total of 10 partners, including Retrieving Freedom, The Waverly Senior Center, and Redeemer Lutheran Church. Students also made 25 tie blankets and wrote 190 thank you notes for area assisted living residents and health care workers.
Thank you again and please join the VAC and other on-campus partners when we host MLK Day 2023 on Monday, January 16!
