Centennial-Vollmer Halls Renovation Project updatease Kapers audition

Since the summer of 2020, the College has been quietly raising money to fund the renovation of Centennial and Vollmer halls with a focus on inclusion and belonging. These residence halls, which house about half of the first-year class, have remained nearly the same since their construction in the early to mid-1950s. With fundraising for the estimated $11 million project nearing completion, the College has engaged Cardinal Construction to serve as the project manager and lead the bidding process for the work.

Project highlights

A small addition in the northeast corner where Centennial and Vollmer connect will include an elevator, accessible walkway connecting the halls’ first floors, and a second-floor addition with a kitchen/lounge space and study rooms.
New heating system
Air conditioning throughout the buildings
Updated bathrooms
Updated laundry rooms on each floor
Accessible single rooms with their own bathrooms
Updated and accessible common areas

Project funding

The project is expected to cost about $11 million. The College has raised $6 million in donor gifts and secured a $1.5 million challenge grant that, when completed, will bring the total raised to $9 million. The Board of Regents has directed the College to fulfill the challenge by June 1, 2022. The College also is applying for a $2 million State Historical Tax Credit that will bring the total secured for the project to the needed $11 million.

Project timeline

Dependent on final approval of the construction contract by the Board of Regents, this project will be completed in three phases, with work beginning in November 2021 and ending in August 2023.

Phase 1 – Addition (including areas in Centennial & Vollmer connected to the addition)
Begin groundwork in November 2021
Begin other work in December 2021
Finish work in early August 2022
Phase 2 – Remodel Vollmer Hall
Begin work in late April 2022 – To do this, some students living in Vollmer at the end of Winter Term 2022 will need to be relocated to other rooms on campus. More details will be shared with those students as the plans are finalized.
Finish work in mid-August 2022
Phase 3 – Remodel Centennial
Begin work in late April 2023
Finish work in mid-August 2023
