If you're new to Wartburg, welcome! The Juice is Wartburg's official weekly e-newsletter full of campus news and events. Look for The Juice on Monday mornings in your Wartburg email inbox and occasionally during the week for important campus announcements. Students, faculty and staff may submit items to be included; the deadline is 4 p.m. each Thursday. Click here to see our email policies and what kind of items are included. We also send out a separate "Student" version of The Juice with announcements pertaining to the student body, which can be viewed each week on Info Center.

Summer hours extended to Aug. 27
|
The last day for summer hours is Friday, Aug. 27. Office hours will return to 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. starting Monday, Aug. 30.

All faculty and staff who want to have a studio portrait taken should come to the photo studio Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 1-3 p.m. in the photo studio.
Directions to the photo studio in FAC 52:
• Enter the main lobby area of the Bachman Fine Arts Center by the art gallery (windows side, facing the Chapel).
• On the right, take the staircase down to the basement
• Follow the long hallway about half-way and turn left (clock on the wall for reference).
• The studio is the first door on the right.

The Wartburg community extends its condolences to Dr. Brian Birgen, professor of mathematics, and Dr. Mariah Birgen, professor of mathematics, on the death of Brian’s father, Virgil Birgen, who passed away June 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, at age 92. Funeral services were held recently in Las Vegas. Please click here to view the obituary.
The Wartburg community extends its condolences to Dr. Rachel Clark, associate professor of English, on the death of her father, Gary Clark, who passed away Aug. 14 in Columbus, Ohio, at age 68. A memorial service will be held in the upcoming weeks. Please click here to view the obituary.
The Wartburg community extends its condolences to the friends and former colleagues of Henry "Hank" Savage, who passed away Aug. 4 in New Hampton at age 91. Hank was Wartburg's director of building maintenance for Becker Hall of Science and the library before retiring in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Helena, also a former college employee. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 9, at Community Methodist Church in Clarksville. Please click here to view the obituary.

Dr. Kunihiko Terasawa, associate professor of religion, presented his paper “My research activities in South Korea and Hong Kong” at the Japan Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies on Aug. 18.
Students and alumni recently presented at the Midwest Environmental Education Conference (MEEC) at Luther College in Decorah July 26-29 with Dr. Michael Bechtel '94, associate professor of science education. Noah Christians '21 and Ryan Dalton ’21 presented "Biophilic Effects on Long-Term Concept Retention, Academic Achievement, and Intrinsic Motivation in Secondary Science Classrooms." Students Genoa Greg '22 and Hannah Schmitt '22 presented research using dart frogs in the classroom to engage students in cross-curricular disciplines. Students Sidney Baumgartner '22 and Becca Montgomery '22 presented on "Classroom Ioponics: Educational Lessons for Iowa Students." Liz Stange '21 presented undergraduate research ("Sustaining Education: A Book Talk w/ Some Real Talk") through her work with AmeriCorps.
Elementary education students Sidney Baumgartner '22 and Becca Montgomery '22 recently presented classroom ioponics research at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Des Moines June 28-July 1 with Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94. Educators from across the country attended the presentation to learn new educational strategies and share their own experiences using aquaponics in the classroom. Ioponics has been expanding throughout the state of Iowa and the country with systems recently delivered to Alaska and Colorado.
Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 was recently awarded a grant from the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council to build and deliver classroom ioponics systems to educators across the state. Starting Aug. 2, students Sidney Baumgartner '22 and Becca Montgomery '22 will be leading professional development sessions for the next two weeks. The ioponics team will be hosting the largest professional development session on our campus Aug. 10 for 20 educators and the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.

Mail Center update: postage rate increases Aug. 29
|
Postage rates will increase Aug. 29. Departments wishing to purchase stamps ahead of the price increase should notify the Mail Center as soon as possible to ensure availability. The most economical way to send mail for departments is either metered mail or bulk non-profit as opposed to stamps. Contact Kory Figura for more information about reducing your mailing costs. Relevant rate increases are as follows:

Postcards increase 4 cents to 40 cents |

Large envelope base rate increases 16 cents to $1.16; additional ounce rate does not increase |

Retirement reception for Don Meyer
|
Faculty and staff are invited to a retirement reception honoring Don Meyer, senior gift planner, on Monday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Hagemann Castle Room. There will be a brief program at 3:30 p.m.

Wartburg Scholarship Club membership & tailgate event
|
Known for many years as the Wartburg Women’s Club, the club now offers membership to ALL faculty, staff, retirees, their spouses, and area alumni who want to support Wartburg students through scholarships! We invite you to join us at our fall event to learn more about the club and become a member. The Fall Tailgate Social will be Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (before the Wartburg home football game) at Greenwood, 902 12th St. NW, Waverly, hosted by President Darrel and Christy Colson. Cost is $10 per person, which includes food and beverages. Please register at this link.
What we do in the club:
The club's main effort throughout the year is to raise funds for Wartburg scholarships by providing treats that are ordered for students. You sign up for the treats you want to provide on the dates that work for you. Members are asked to provide five treats during the year. Click here to learn more and to sign up to become a member. Dues are $15 for a single membership and $25 for a couple.

Notify college about alumni updates

The Alumni and Parent Relations Office reminds you to encourage alumni to notify the college of life updates (milestones, job changes, etc.) and address changes using the form at www.wartburg.edu/update-our-records or by emailing alumni@wartburg.edu. In addition, you can notify the Alumni Office when Wartburg alumni assist in your department (i.e. camps, conferences, panels, etc.). The Alumni Office is happy to provide Wartburg swag to those alums as a measurement of stewardship and thanks. Just send us a note at alumni@wartburg.edu.

Everfi training still to be completed

As the academic year approaches, the Human Resources Office would like to remind employees to complete their Data Security, FERPA, and annual Title IX training that was assigned in the spring. Thanks to those employees who have completed all of their training; however, we still have quite a few outstanding assignments to get completed. If you have not completed the course, please login to your Everfi portal at this link.

Northeast Iowa Family Practice Center located in Waterloo has been acquired by MercyOne. As you may recall, MercyOne is NOT in the Bridges network. Effective immediately, any claims incurred at this clinic by Bridges members will be considered out-of-network.
