With Duane Liddle running for mayor, his at-large council seat is up for grabs. Three candidates are running to fill the seat. The candidates are Kathy Olson, Kent Farran, and Jacqui Hansen.
Kathy Olson believes she can use her background experiences as a member of the city council.
“I spent almost 20 years in human resources at Cuna Mutual and it was just a really wonderful job that I just loved,” said Olson.
Olson said that she has a real passion for improving the communication between the city and the residents.
“I’m just committed to studying and learning about the issues so I can be an informed decision maker,” said Olson.
Kent Farran wants to represent the majority of the Waverly community.
“Waverly is a very friendly community. Waverly takes pride in its high school. Waverly takes pride in its downtown and Waverly takes pride in business and I would like to see the projects that we do and the money that we spend, so that the majority of the people benefit instead of the minority,” said Farran.
Farran would also like to have the town’s interest come first.
“I know there has been times not intentionally but that some of the board members because of their jobs, they felt that they needed to vote a certain way because of where they worked,” said Farran
Jacqui Hansen wants Waverly to be better prepared if the town has to experience another flood.
“All of us kind of assumed that there would be a flood mitigation plan in place and there wasn’t. We had friends and neighbors that ended up spending the night in the rail trail picnic shelter overnight, rather than in a building and I don’t want to see that happen again,” said Hansen.
“I’m a candidate that will listen to what my constituents are interested in and I would be there to serve them and not the other way around,” said Hansen.
Hansen wants everyone to vote on Nov 3.
“Regardless of who wins, I hope that all of us can pull together as a community and do whatever we need to make Waverly a great community,” said Hansen.
Election Day is Nov 3 and if no single candidate receives a majority of the vote, a runoff election will be held in December.
