Around 2 P.M. Monday afternoon, Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene of a dump truck in the ditch near Highway 218.

The dump truck, which was hauling residential debris from last year's flood to the Black Hawk County landfill, had gone off the side of the southbound on-ramp to Highway 218 south of Waverly.

The driver of the truck was not seriously injured, but was taken to the Waverly Health Center for a precautionary examination.

Bremer County Emergency Management coordinator Kip Ladage also contacted the DNR and FEMA. The material from the FEMA buyouts is documented from the time of demolition to the time of disposal.

Ladage says, "It's a requirement. Anything to do with the buyout demolition process has to be considered to have the possibility of having asbestos. Because of the asbestos risk, people have to wear the protective apparel."

The Waverly Fire Department was called to the scene to put water on the dumped debris. The water helps contain the spreading of any possible asbestos into the air.
