Editorial: Are Wartburg students over-involved?

Last Updated Sep 28, 2009

As the days fall into a routine, it seems that Wartburg students are constantly on the go. It is through this over-involvement, however, that the caliber and maturity of students is shown, and Wartburg should pride itself in the dedication and passion of its students.

Success in athletics has led the school to receive the Iowa Conference combined all-sports trophies for six consecutive years for accomplishments in both men’s and women’s athletics. Over a third of the student body participates in athletics as players, student coaches or managers. Some are even dual sport athletes.

Even with so much athletic action, approximately 375 students are involved in 15 different music ensembles. Highlighting the department is Christmas with Wartburg and tours that take students abroad.

Add those numbers to the 85 percent of students involved in one or more of 80 student organizations and groups and it is clear why the campus is in constant motion.

It is easy to assume because of this kind of involvement, the grades of students would feel the damage. But the average grade point average of the entire student body is 3.146, above a B average.

Although seeming like a plethora of numbers, the data reinforces the idea of Wartburg students’ intense involvement in academic and extracurricular activities.

Because this doesn’t impair their academic success, these students deserve applause for balancing their hectic, and at times frantic, lifestyles.

Without this passion to do well and over-achieve, Wartburg would not find itself in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of America’s Best Colleges.

Students, keep doing what you are doing. Remember academics come first. Only juggle what you can handle, but keep in mind there are resources and enthusiastic faculty, staff and fellow students on campus to help you keep achieving great things.
