The painting of Wartburg College’s first president, Georg Grossmann, was removed from the “Wall of Presidents” in Luther Hall early last week.
Paintings and photographs of all of the college’s former presidents hang on the wall which is accessible to all students, staff and visitors.
The one-of-a-kind painting was removed from the hooks that held it on the wall.
The portrait was turned in to the campus security office Friday morning.
Two students found the painting resting against the ticket booth of Walston-Hoover Stadium when they went out for a run.
As they returned, the portrait was still there so they took it to the security office and turned it in.
The only noticeable damage to the portrait was a water drop on the paper backing of the painting, so it is believed it had not been outside long.
Director of Campus Safety and Security John Myers III returned the painting to the President’s Office, and after that, college officials had it re-secured to the wall.
