The Wartburg men’s basketball team split a pair of games this week, topping the University of Dubuque 71-53 in front of a home crowd Saturday afternoon and dropping a game to Loras in Dubuque on Wednesday 61-45.
Saturday’s win saw eight of the 10 players who entered the game for the Knights put up at least three points. The Knights were led by Ross Timmermans as he finished the night with 16 points.
The first half was back and forth with the biggest lead being held by the Knights 20-13 with 5:58 left in the half.
With 16:30 left in the game, the Knights went on a 13-0 run to take a 46-33 lead and never looked back.
Down the stretch, the Knights were led by Cole Danielson and Timmermans as they each scored 13 points in the second half and were able to pick apart the Spartan defense.
Jordan Sathoff added 12 points for the Knights with seven rebounds.
Kelly McCarville, who came off the bench to score seven points and pull down 10 rebounds.
The Knights had a rough time on Wednesday as they fell to the Loras 61-45.
Shooting the basketball seemed to be a problem for the Knights as they only shot 31.1 percent from the field including 15.8 percent from three-point range where the Knights shot 3-of-19 with Timmermans making all three of the three point shots.
The leading scorer was Timmermans who had 11 points while McCarville chipped in nine.
“We just didn’t shoot the ball very well. I don’t know if we ever adapted to the physicality of the game. We need to take shots within the framework of the offense. We need to play to our strengths,” head coach Dick Peth said.
Not only were the Knights having an off-night shooting but they were outrebounded 51-35.
Sathoff lead the Knights pulling down eight boards.
The Knights are currently 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the Iowa Conference and will head to Buena Vista on Wednesday. The Beavers recently clinched an IIAC tournamnet birth and only have one conference loss on the year, coming from the Knights. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. in Storm Lake.
