“It’s the most goals we’ve scored all year, so I think we played well,” head coach T.J. Buchholz said.
The Knights started scoring off in the seventh minute after Victor Mudzinganyama found the back of the net off of a an Elvis Alicic pass. Mudzinganyama found the back of the net again in the 12th minute after a pass from Nate Hedrington, to put the Knights up 2-0.
Geoff Miller started his stellar afternoon in the 22nd minute after he turned an Alicic pass into a goal. Miller then connected with Ed Axcer Way in the 28th minute as Way pushed the ball between the pipes for the team’s fourth goal.
The Rams weren’t ready to give up, while Kobina Essandoh connected with Bobby Boughton in the 30th minute to bring the score to 4-1 at the half.
“We gave them some chances and gave them a goal, which is something we didn’t want to do,” Buchholz said. He said the coaching staff challenged the Knights to go out in the second half and put the game away.”
The Knights listened to their coaches as Alicic found the back of the net off of a penalty kick in the 49th minute.
Eric Peters took a Miller pass and hit the back of the goal during the 51st minute. Miller scored a pair of goals in the 61st and 62nd minutes. In the 61st Mudzinganyama found Miller and in the 62nd Miller found the back of the net for an unassisted goal.
In the 77th minute Nate Gottsacker found Hedrington who pushed the ball through the net to make the score 9-1. Gottsacker then converted a Mike Miniaci pass into the final goal of the afternoon during the 80th minute for a final score of 10-1.
The Knights double-digit score was the first since 2004. The Knights out-shot the Rams 27-12.
Trent Michael and Brandon Busbee were between the pipes for the Knights. Michael finished the day with one save and Busbee finished with three.
“I think for us going forward with three big games this week, it was important to score a lot of goals and bring a lot of confidence into the three games we have this week,” Buchholz said.
The 7-3 Knights, 1-1 in conference play, will suit up against Northwestern, Simpson and Coe this week.
The Knights headed to Orange City to take on Buchholz’s former team of the Northwestern Red Raiders.
