We got lost on our way to class today. Not walking…Carlos, a Spanish guy that is currently residing with us, offered to take us to school during his siesta from work. Naturally, we allowed him to because it was just nasty and rainy all day. He’s not originally from Sevilla, he actually just moved from Salamanca because he got a job here and now he’s living with us until he finds his own place. So, we get in the car and he plugs in the GPS and I type in the street. Little did we know we’d be curling through the narrow streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, (the oldest neighborhood in Seville where the streets are itsy bitsy) for almost 40 minutes trying to find our way. We got pretty close…right next to the cathedral but he refused to let us out there so we kept going, and eventually it got late and so we had to grab a cab! Poor Carlos! I felt so bad. The guy tries to do something nice, but instead, gets taken on a wild goose chase. It was quite the adventure. The problem was that the GPS was telling him to go on certain streets that are one ways and dead ends and in Santa Cruz, the streets are ridiculous and the buildings are so close together, it’s merely impossible to turn around. So Molly and I showed up in class (no pun intended) to school…via cab.
At dinner, Carlos felt horrible about it and we kept reassuring him it was fine…we didn’t really know the way to get there via car either so we just blamed the GPS, but it was quite an adventure!
On a different note, my mom called on Monday morning…pretty early. It was about 7:45am here and 1am in Iowa so I was immediately concerned. Turns out she bought a plane ticket to Puerto Rico because her mom is not doing too well. I was slightly surprised but I’m glad she’s there now with her family. It had been about 13 years since they’ve seen each other…kind of a complicated situation but it was due time, I suppose.
Hopefully everything with that and my stuff here works out…I’m a little stressed but I think I would be more so if I were at home right now, so I’m going to let the Sevillana in me come out and try to relax and not worry about it. That’s what tonight is for. Hip hop night at Bandalai.
