Farewell reception for science faculty
Science Center faculty and staff will host a farewell coffee reception for Dr. Roy Ventullo and Dr. Denis Drolet on Tuesday, April 18, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in Chapel Commons. Everyone is welcome to wish these two professors well in their future endeavors as they prepare to leave Wartburg at the end of the academic year.
Dogs needed for Stress-Free Zone
S.A.F.E. (Suicide Awareness For Everyone) will host a Stress-Free Zone event Tuesday, April 18, 3-5 p.m., on the campus mall. This opportunity for students to take a break from studying will feature a chance to engage in some animal therapy. Last year, faculty and staff members brought their dogs for students interact with, and S.A.F.E. invites you to do so again this year. Please make sure dogs are on a leash. Staff performance appraisals
The staff performance appraisal process is now in session. The process runs from April to June, with all performance appraisals due to Human Resources by June 30. Employees and supervisors will be evaluated for the time frame of June 1, 2016-May 31, 2017, meeting the criteria of working at least 1,000 hours annually and being employed by the college as of Dec. 31, 2016. All forms, instructions, and documents used for this process are located on the InfoCenter. Cabinet will receive a report in July with appraisals completed in their respective areas. Properties for rent 
The college has properties available for rent. All these properties are well-maintained and very close to campus. If you are interested in renting one of these properties, please contact Laura Davis, 352-8318, to obtain additional information.
Breakfast volunteers needed
Faculty and staff volunteers are needed to help serve the study night breakfast for students, Tuesday, April 18, 11 p.m. to midnight. Email Shelly Geweke or call her at 319-352-8303 if you can help.
Changes in the HR-Payroll Office 
Some of the expected changes in the HR-Payroll Office, driven by the revenue-enhancement and expense-saving process, have happened sooner than anticipated. Jamie Hollaway, director of HR and payroll, will now handle all faculty and staff payroll and Kronos questions. These questions had been handled by Tracy Keller, who is no longer with the college. Please continue to direct all student payroll and Kronos questions to Abbie Raum, student employment coordinator. 
UKnight Day participation skyrockets 
Our campus truly UKnighted on March 30, as we raised more than $110,000 and demolished Wartburg’s one-day participation record! Among the 1,416 UKnight Day donors were 138 faculty and staff and 219 students, which represent a 71 percent increase in campus givers from last year. Thank you for all that you do on UKnight Day and every day to make Wartburg the finest in the East or West!
Student employee wages 
Effective June 1, the Wartburg College Student Employment program will require all student employees to deposit their wages directly into their bank account, set up a Student Payroll Deduction Agreement to have wages applied to their tuition account, or arrange a combination of these two options. This change is part of the college’s expense-reduction efforts as well as a way in which we can adapt more sustainable practices. Supervisors are encouraged to talk with their student employees about this change and direct them to the Student Employment Office to make arrangements for their future wages. Leadership opportunity for high school juniors
The Institute for Leadership Education seeks high school juniors interested in expanding their leadership skills and service experiences through the 2017-18 High School Leadership Institute. Selected high school juniors will:
  • Attend a leadership institute at Wartburg June 25- July 1 or at Wartburg West in Denver, Colo., July 31-Aug. 5 (focus on sustainability).
  • Learn leadership theory and practice leadership skills.
  • Participate in service opportunities in the community. 
  • Develop a service project to implement in their own community during their senior year.

Congrats to Gremmels Fellowship recipient
Taylor Yezek ’12 is this year’s recipient of the Bob Gremmels Graduate Fellowship. Yezek is pursuing a master’s degree in strategic communication at the University of Iowa. The fellowship awards a $9,000 stipend in honor of the remarkable legacy of leadership and service provided to the college by Gremmels, professor emeritus of journalism, and is made possible through the generosity of Harold P. ’58 and Grace A. ’61 Kurtz.

CONDOLENCES
 



The Wartburg community offers condolences to Julie Drewes, visual media manager in Marketing & Communication, on the death of her mother-in-law, Olivia Drewes, on Friday in Oelwein. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, with visitation one hour before the service at the church. Click here to see the obituary.

Sanctuary 
Join us Wednesday, April 19, for Sanctuary, a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion. Sanctuary takes place at 9 p.m. in Chapel Commons (basement). Come by at 8:45 for snacks and conversation.
May Term worship
Sanctuary is a holy space in the midst of your busy life where you can recharge and renew. Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, music, prayers, and communion. This will be the only worship opportunity on campus during May Term and will take place on Sunday evenings (May 7, 14, and 21) at 8 p.m. in Chapel Commons (basement). Come by at 7:45 for snacks and conversation; Sanctuary begins at 8 and ends at 9.

PROFESSIONAL NOTES
 
Two exegetical essays by Walter “Chip” Bouzard have been published on Working Preacher. Bouzard comments on the “1st Reading” for April 9 and the “Vigil IV Reading” for April 15.  

The Rev. Dr. Kit Kleinhans, Mike and Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair of Lutheran Heritage and Mission, was the guest on two sessions of Relevant or Irrelevant, a public information and opinion program of KALA FM, the public radio station of St. Ambrose University, Davenport. She was interviewed in February concerning the significance of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. She was invited back for a follow-up interview in March to speak about women and the Reformation for Women’s History Month. Alumnus Brett Monnard was one of the interviewers for both programs.

Kunihiko Terasawa, assistant professor in world religions, presented his paper A Critical Examination of the Buddhist-Christian Cooperation Resisting the National War Policy in Japan before WWII in section 1:3 of Beyond Conflict and Tolerance: Co-existence and Collaboration among Religious Communities in Asia at the ASIANetwork Conference in Chicago on April 8. Also, Terasawa’s article Seno’o Giro’s Buddhist Socialism, Anti-War movement, and Dialogue with Social Christianity in 1930s-40s Japan has been accepted and will be published in the 2017 edition of the peer-reviewed Journal of Buddhist-Christian Studies. 

Kim Folkers, associate professor of marketing, presented as part of a panel, Keeping Current: Learning New Truths – Sabbatical, ‘Staybatical,’ or Evolving on the Fly, at the 2017 MBAA Annual Conference in Chicago, March 22-24. 

 
WARTBURG IN THE NEWS
 
Lydia Posselt ’07 was selected as part of an international preaching contest to deliver the sermon at the closing worship of the Lutheran World Federation Assembly in Windhoek, Namibia, as reported by Lutheran World.

Katie Leners Johnston ’07 was named principal of North Cedar Elementary, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Lucy Joseph ’07 started the City Sparkles cheerleading squad, a mix of general education students and students with disabilities, at Iowa City High School, as reported by CBS2.

Josh Hauser ’06 honored his mother, who was murdered in 1994, by creating and donating "Becky Baskets" to Horizon's Homicide Survivors program, as reported in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Cedar Rapids Gazette, and Des Moines Register.

Eric Keller was named the d3wrestle.com National Coach of the Year, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Ben Bogard '16 talked about his experience working as a video fellow at Buzzfeed and showing his film, The Art of Hope, at the Sundance Film Festival with the Post-Bulletin.
