Culture Week events

Culture Week begins Monday. Watch for special Snap filters at events, and use #WorldAtWartburg on social media to celebrate Wartburg's international diversity!

  • Monday, March 19: Dances from Around the World
    The W Classrooms, 7-8:30 p.m.
    Students will showcase dance moves from their home countries.
  • Tuesday, March 20: Stranger Interactions: Cultural Distinctions in the Wartburg Classroom
    The W Classrooms, W 2238 & 2240, 7-8:30 p.m.
    Faculty and students will lead this panel discussion on classroom interactions, assumed cultural assimilation and stereotypes.
  • Wednesday, March 21: World Café
    Ballrooms, 7-9 p.m.
    This creative workshop will explore solutions to “wicked problems” with Dr. Roelofse and Dr. Gashaw.
  • Thursday, March 22: Crafts and Henna
    The Hub, 6:30-8 p.m.
    Get “hands-on” with creative crafts from around the world and body art!
  • Friday, March 23: Culture Show
    Neumann Auditorium, 7-9 p.m.
    Enjoy an engaging collection of performances representing the entire world right here in Waverly.
NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Grad Finale on Thursday
May and August graduates should plan to attend the Grad Finale on Thursday, March 22, anytime between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. in the ballrooms. Staff from various offices will be available to assist you in the transition from student to graduate, and you will be cleared to order your cap and gown. Wicked Problems Poster challenge
Congratulations to our inaugural Wicked Problems Poster Challenge students! The challenge generated more than 65 posters that have been narrowed down to five ideas entering the next phase of the process. Students selected for Phase 2 are:

  • Will McDonald
  • Ashley Reynolds

Join these students Wednesday, March 21, 7-9 p.m. in the ballrooms for a collaborative World Café. During this event, students from across campus will gather to assist in further development of the ideas. The top ideas that come from the World Café will go on to Phase 3 of the challenge and present during RICE Day on Thursday, April 12, from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in WBC 116. Thank you to everyone who entered! The Wicked Problems Poster Challenge will return next fall.

Study participants needed 
Wartburg students who are at least 18 years old and have consumed alcohol in high school and/or currently drink alcohol are eligible to participate in a study about alcohol motives and loneliness. Participants will complete multiple questionnaires. Students enrolled in PSY 101 or other psychology courses who want to participate for credit should register through the Sona system. For more information, contact Kavalyn Wilson.
Financial aid for summer school students
The Financial Aid Office will begin taking appointments Monday, April 9, to discuss financial aid options for students planning to attend summer school. You must be registered for your summer classes before scheduling an appointment with the Financial Aid Office. Email finaid@wartburg.edu to schedule your appointment. 
Security update

Security cameras have been installed in the following locations:

  • Grossman North entrance
  • Grossman West entrance
  • Grossman South entrance
  • Lohe East entrance
  • Cardinal Commons
  • Vogel Library lobby
  • The Wartburg Store
  • Mensa entrance

This week they will be aimed, configured and added into the security system for monitoring. A contractor has visited campus to evaluate the upcoming installation of locks in Centennial Complex. Some of the keyed switches that will be installed in the showers and bathrooms next week have arrived on campus. President Colson, Dean Dan Kittle, and members of the Student Life staff hosted a Town Hall meeting last week, where students had the opportunity to voice their concerns about issues on campus. Student Senate Executive Team openings 
Applications for appointed positions on the Student Senate Executive Team are now available. The positions are administrative ombudsperson, academic ombudsperson, executive assistant for diversity, and public relations director. For more information on what each position entails, click here and refer to pages 7-8. Applications will be posted on the Student Senate InfoCenter page and shared on social media. All applications are due Friday, March 23, at 11:59 p.m. Email them to joshua.voigt@wartburg.edu. Study participants needed 
Students are needed to take part in a study examining the role of parent and peer alcohol-modeled drinking patterns and attitudes on college students’ alcohol consumption and attitudes. This study is being conducted for PSY 421: Advanced Research Methods. If you are interested in participating in the study, click here and sign up, or contact Dean Pieper or 319-404-6673. Questions also can be directed to Shaheen Munir, research adviser. 
Requests for 2018-19 live streaming due April 15
If you have an event in 2018-19 that you believe warrants live streaming through Knight Vision, please submit your request by Sunday, April 15. The Knight Vision executive team will review submissions and make final determinations about what can be covered. Submit your request here
Nominate an outstanding high school teacher 
Graduating seniors, did you have a high school teacher who inspired you and contributed to your accomplishment of earning a degree from Wartburg College? If so, please nominate your teacher for the Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year Award. Winning teachers will receive $500. In addition, a $500 scholarship will be made available to a rising senior from your high school. For more details and the nomination form, click here. Nominations are due by noon Friday, March 23.
igKnight mentor opportunity 
Do you want to inspire and instill potential in others?Become an igKnight mentor for the 2018-19 school year! The program focuses on mentoring students wherever they are in their college experience and was created to help students pursue and meet their academic, personal, and professional goals. To be an igKnight mentor, students must be a second-, third-, or fourth-year student with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above. Click here to apply by Friday, March 23. Direct questions to Veronica Reece

SPIRITUAL LIFE & CAMPUS MINISTRY
 
Upcoming Chapel services
Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel; Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester.
Lenten Chapels on Wednesdays 
Sabbath as Resistance will be the Lenten Chapel Series during Wednesday chapels, Feb. 14-March 28. Gather from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. in the chapel for this brief time of “Sabbath” as we listen for God’s call to our community and in our personal lives. (Themes are taken from Walter Brueggemann’s Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now, Westminster John Knox, 2014.)
  • March 21: Resistance to Multitasking, Amos 8:4-8
  • Holy Week, March 28: Resistance to Craving and Violent Action, Mark 14:43-50
Save the date for Bishop Younan visit
Bishop Munib Younan of the ELCA in Jordan and the Holy Land will visit Wartburg in April. His schedule will be: Thursday, April 5, 4-5 p.m., presentation; Friday, April 6, 10:15-10:35 a.m., Weekday Chapel, and 7-8:15 p.m., public presentation including Q&A session.
Sanctuary on Wednesdays
Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion. Sanctuary takes place at 9 p.m. each Wednesday evening in Chapel Commons (basement). Come by at 8:45 for snacks and conversation. This is a great way to center yourself in the midst of your busy week.
 
WARTBURG IN THE NEWS
 
The Wartburg women's basketball team ended its undefeated season Friday in an NCAA Semifinals loss to Bowdoin, 62-90, as reported by Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier and the Des Moines Register

The annual Drag Show, sponsored by Alliance, was featured in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

The women's basketball team is being led into the Final Four by a group of Iowa athletes, as reported by KCRGKWWL, and the Des Moines Register

Wrestling coach Eric Keller shared his excitement about leading his Knights to another national championship and the anxiety that comes just hours later as he looks forward to 2019 with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

The Wartburg women’s basketball team defeated East Texas Baptist, 65-61, to advance to the Final Four this Friday in Rochester, Minn., as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls CourierKWWL, and CBS/FOX 28.

The Waterloo-Cedar Fall Courier reported on the Wartburg wrestling team’s 14th national title. At the National Championships on Saturday, the team also had three individual champions and two national runner-ups along with eight overall All-Americans.

The women's basketball team talked about the team culture that has allowed them to find success on and off the court, as told by d3hoops.com.

Tim Grove ’94 was featured on 60 Minutes for his work in Trauma Informed Care at SaintA's, a Wisconsin-based organization that provides innovative family-centered care and educational services that embrace diversity and empower children, families, and adults to improve the quality of their lives. 

Eric DeVos ’18 talked about his journey to this year's wrestling national championships and plans after college in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
