MLK Day class schedule for today
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Wartburg alters the class schedule on this federal holiday to free students and faculty to participate in afternoon service projects. Class periods one through six will meet for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between each. Weekday Chapel will not be held. Evening classes will meet at their regularly scheduled time.
• Period 1 (regularly starting at 7:45 a.m.) will be 7:45-8:35 a.m.
• Period 2 (9 a.m.) will be 8:45-9:35 a.m.
• Period 3 (10:45 a.m.) will be 9:45-10:35 a.m.
• Period 4 (noon) will be 10:45-11:35 a.m.
• Period 5 (1:15 p.m.) will be 11:45 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
• Period 6 (2:30 p.m.) will be 12:45-1:35 p.m.

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Clinton Classroom, Pathways Peers and professional staff will be on hand to help with résumés and cover letters. WartburgAlert test planned Jan. 18
The emergency notification system for Wartburg College, WartburgAlert, will be tested around noon Thursday, Jan. 18. WartburgAlert is tested, at minimum, once per term. Alerts aren’t automatically sent. You have to register your phone in order to receive alerts. There is no charge for registering and you may register up to two numbers for text notification and two numbers for voice phones. You are strongly encouraged to register an SMS number to receive a text, as it is the quickest and most reliable means of notification. To register, log on to the InfoCenter and click on Offices, Parking & Safety, WartburgAlert. If you have problems registering, come to the security office Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To verify if you are registered before Jan. 18, send an email to campus.security@wartburg.edu, and we will confirm your registration.

Phil & Lit Society
The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West. The speaker will be the Rev. Brian Beckstrom, campus pastor. His talk is titled Lutheran Higher Education in a Secular Age: Religious Identity and Mission at ELCA Colleges. All are welcome.
Dance Marathon Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament
Sign up for the Dance Marathon Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament Saturday, Jan. 27. Cost is $30 per team. All profits go to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Teams must include three girls on the court at all times and one Wartburg student on each team. Non-Wartburg players must fill out liability form prior to playing. The first-place team will win a gift card. Payments to play can be sent to Connor Frerichs, Box #0622, 100 Wartburg Blvd, Waverly, IA, 50677.
Dance Marathon FT5K race
Wartburg College Dance Marathon will sponsor a 5K race Saturday, March 17. Registration fee is $20 by March 1 and $25 after March 1. T-shirts are guaranteed for early registrants (by March 1). Registration will also be available the day of the race, starting at 7:30 a.m.; the race will begin at 8:30 a.m. All profits will go to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Registration fees can be mailed to Connor Frerichs, Box #0622, 100 Wartburg Blvd, Waverly, IA 50677.
McElroy Fellowship application deadline Jan. 31
Top seniors applying for Ph.D. programs are encouraged to apply for the McElroy Fellowship, which supports $10,000 for each of three Ph.D. program years. Click here for more information. Contact Gloria Campbell for an application form. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31. Two references are required.
Apply for a Student Senate scholarship
Student Senate annually funds two $500 scholarships, awarded to Wartburgstudents who embody the principles set forth in the mission statement, are well-rounded students, and exhibit leadership and service through their involvement on and/or off campus. FIELD Program accepting applications 
The Minor League Baseball Fostering Inclusion through Education and Leadership Development (FIELD) Program is now accepting applications for the class of 2018. The program, geared toward women and minority students, was created under the MiLB Diversity Initiative  to engage the next generation of diverse leaders in sports business. The program takes place June 4-9 in Vero Beach, Fla. Cost is $250 plus cost of travel. The application deadline is March 16. Click here to apply. Click here for more information about the program.

Wicked Problems Poster Challenge deadline
Wartburg College is facilitating the first Wicked Problems Poster Challenge. Gather your friends, or tackle a problem on your own! Find out more at www.wartburg.edu/incubator. Unified Sports Day volunteers 
Volunteers are needed for Unified Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 8:40 a.m. to 1 p.m. You will spend the day with Special Olympic Athletes, who will be participating in activities such as basketball, volleyball, crafts, and more. It is great way to give back to the community and it’s a lot of fun! Sign up at the table as you walk into the Student Center during lunch and dinner hours Jan. 8-9, or through this link. Davis Projects for Peace deadline Jan. 15
Students with an interest in supporting and encouraging peace throughout the world should consider developing a Project for Peace. Project proposals should be creative, engaging, meaningful, and measurable. In addition, the selected Wartburg project would be implemented during the summer of 2018 and given $10,000 of funding/reward. Wartburg Knightcallers is a job about connecting with people through conversation. Student Employee Handbook revised
The Student Employee Handbook has been revised and can be accessed here. The Student Employment website has also been updated to include quick links to the Student Pay Stub, KnightTime Timecard, and the Supervisor Transfer Set applications.

Off-Campus Release applications 
Off-Campus Release applications are available in the Student Life Office. Students desiring to live off campus for the 2018-19 academic year must apply for approval from the Residential Life Office. Applications must be submitted by Monday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m.
Keep on Learning proposals
The Alumni Office is now requesting Keep on Learning proposals for the 2018-19 academic year. The Keep on Learning program offers a series of four-week courses to all residents of the Cedar Valley during seven months of the academic year. All are invited to develop a course proposal for consideration. Click here for more information. 
Hearthside Project book discussion
Join Kathy Traetow, study abroad office coordinator, and other students for a Hearthside Project discussion about Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. RICE Day deadlines
Planning is underway for the seventh annual Wartburg College RICE Day celebration on Thursday, April 12, and the Session Form (web-based: department, contact, time and location preferences, session format, setup and AV needs) deadline is Friday, Jan. 26. Faculty/department reps should submit this form, not individual students. Go to www.wartburg.edu/rice.
Recipes from Home 
Students, faculty, and staff are asked to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2018-19 Mensa menu. Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides, and desserts can be emailed to shelly.geweke@wartburg.edu by Friday, Jan. 26. Don’t forget to include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa and the student body will vote for their favorites. Dishes that receive a “thumbs-up” will be considered for next year’s Mensa menu.
Postal rate increase
U.S. Postal Service rates will increase Jan. 21. Stamp prices will increase by 1 cent for postcards, letters, and metered mail. Package, Priority Mail, and Express Mail rates will increase by varying amounts, depending on weight and destination. More information can be found here or by contacting the Mail Center at 352-8263.
No mail on MLK Day 
There will be no incoming or outgoing postal mail Monday, Jan. 15, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Mail Center will still be open and delivery to campus offices will be limited. Email the Mail Center or call 352-8263 for more information.

Blankets of Love service project 
Blankets of Love, which will be given to youths at Bremwood Residential Treatment Center, will be created during the afternoon on MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 15, in the Chapel Commons. All are welcome.
Upcoming Chapel services

Make a New Year's resolution to join us for Chapel! Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel; Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m. Weekday Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. This week's schedule:

  • Monday, Jan. 15 – No Chapel, MLK Service Day
  • Wednesday, Jan. 17 – MLK Chapel with BSU
Oct. 31 Table Talks report 
Several in the campus community have asked for a report summing up the Reformation Table Talks from Oct. 31, 2017. Sanctuary on Wednesdays
Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion. Sanctuary takes place at 9 p.m. each Wednesday evening in Chapel Commons (basement). Come by at 8:45 for snacks and conversation. This is a great way to center yourself in the midst of your busy week.
SALT meeting
SALT will meet Sunday, Jan. 28, 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Chapel Commons. The agenda has been emailed to the leaders who were involved last term.

The wrestling team won its 200th consecutive Iowa Conference dual with a 53-0 victory over Luther College, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

The women's basketball team, which boasts 20 Iowa players, is ranked No. 2 in the nation, as reported by CBS 2/Fox 28

Lindy Winterscheidt Zars ’02 talked about her work as director of marketing strategy and communication for VGM & Associates and in the community as part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier's 20 Under 40 series. 

The wrestling team took second in the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind., as reported by the Des Moines Register

The women's basketball team was ranked No. 2 in the d3hoops.com poll, the highest ever for the team, as reported by KCRR

Tony Frank ’81 discussed Colorado State University's presence in the new $1 billion National Western Stock Show expansion as an opportunity to engage K-12 students and help guide them toward higher education, as reported by the Denver Post

A high school injury inspired wrestler Lance Evans ’17 to pursue a biology degree at Wartburg on his way to medical school, all while wrestling at an elite level, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. 

Basketball always has been a central part of Megan ’18, Miranda ’18 and Riley ’21 Murphy's lives. They continue to share this connection at Wartburg, as reported by the Fort Dodge Messenger.
