Snow and ice season
As we approach the winter season, please remember to use caution when snow and ice are present on sidewalks and steps. Operations & Maintenance will remove snow and add salt or sand to icy spots on sidewalks and steps on campus according to the priority snow removal map. Parking lots will be cleared and salted or sanded as needed by a third party. 
What's YOUR wicked problem?
Wartburg College is facilitating the first Wicked Problems Poster Challenge. Gather your friends, or tackle a problem on your own. Find out more at www.wartburg.edu/incubator. You could win start-up money to help make your idea a reality! The deadline for poster submissions is Jan. 15, 2018, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Retirement reception for Kit Kleinhans 
The Department of Religion & Philosophy will host a retirement reception for the Rev. Dr. Kit Kleinhans on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 12:30-2:30 p.m., in the Hagemann Castle Room. Kit, who came to Wartburg in 1993, is retiring from Wartburg College and will become the dean of the newly established Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in January. Kwanzaa celebration Tuesday
BSU will be sponsor a Kwanzaa celebration Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m., in Chapel Commons. There will be food, dancing, and an explanation of the history of Kwanzaa. All are welcome. Direct questions to maya.weatherall@wartburg.edu.
Service trip applications 
Head out on the experience of a lifetime by serving on a service trip this year during Winter Break or Tour Week. There are various location options for each break. Applications are due in January. Click here to apply for Winter Break trips, and click here for Tour Week.
KWAR Eggnog Pong event Thursday
KWAR, Wartburg’s radio station, will sponsor its annual Eggnog Pong Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m., in the basement of Grossmann Hall. Show off your pong skills while enjoying some music, eggnog, and festive snacks. Register as an individual for $1 or as a team for $2. Email andrea.weiss@wartburg.edu to sign up.
Deadline for Wartburg Shuttle
If you would like to sign up for the Wartburg Shuttle to area airports on Dec. 16, you must do so by Dec. 11. The deadline for the Jan. 3 shuttle is Dec. 22. The shuttle is available for all students. Sign up and see details about the Christmas Break shuttle at www.wartburg.edu/shuttle.
Check and empty your mailbox
Please remember to check and empty your campus mailboxes before leaving for Winter Break. Packages and mail WILL NOT be forwarded during Winter Break. The Mail Center will be open, with regular hours, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., unless otherwise posted, until Dec. 22; it will reopen Jan. 2.
Postal rate increase coming
Effective Jan. 21, the cost to send a standard letter or postcard will increase by one cent, raising stamps to 50 cents and postcards to 35 cents. Package shipping prices will also increase, though prices still depend on packaging, weight, and destination. Faculty and staff are encouraged to consult with the Mail Center if interested in purchasing stamps prior to the price increase to ensure availability and confirm need.

Phil and Lit Society
The last Fall Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The speakers will be Bo Bader, Liz Buckwalter, Eric DeVos, Mackenzie Funke, Ashlee Henderson, Karl Jaeschke, and Zhanfei Xu, students from the American Family Insurance Leadership Insights class that met during May Term. The title of their presentation is AmFam: Allying Lessons Learned to Wartburg’s Focus on the Future. All are welcome.
Incomplete grade policy reminder
An incomplete grade is not valid unless it is supported by a Student Request for Incomplete Grade Form. Students should initiate completion of the form to confirm they have been in communication with the instructor regarding the incomplete grade policy. The form is available under Special Request Forms-Student from the Academics tab of My Wartburg or in the Registrar’s Office. Any incomplete grade submitted by the instructor without support of the form will be changed to an “F.” Additional information about the incomplete grade definition can be found online in the 2017-18 academic catalog.
Recruiting for new Student Ambassadors 
Wartburg Student Ambassadors is a student-led organization that is looking for fun and passionate people to give tours, host overnights, and participate in events with the Admissions Office. If you would like additional information, plan to attend Ambassadors Information Night on Jan. 8, 7-8 p.m., in Buckmaster, or email ambassadors@wartburg.eduClick here to apply. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15.
Wartburg West housing
The college’s lease of the building owned by St. John’s Cathedral in Denver, Colorado, used to house students for the Wartburg West program, will end Dec. 31, 2018, as St. John’s has found other uses for the property. We have enjoyed the relationship with St. John's and hope we can continue to grow this relationship outside of housing our students. We are currently seeking a replacement building.

Academic calendar update
The 2018-19 Academic Calendar has been approved and is now available online. In response to student input, the academic year will begin before Labor Day (with Labor Day as a class day), allowing students a full week off at Thanksgiving in 2018. The 2019-20 academic calendar will continue with a weeklong break at Thanksgiving, but because of when Labor Day and Thanksgiving fall in 2019, it is possible to complete the number of academic days needed without starting school before Labor Day.
Be part of Candlelight Vespers on Dec. 10
Candlelight Vespers will be Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., in the Wartburg Chapel. Please contact the SLCM Office if you or your group is interested in providing music during this service. This may be vocal or instrumental music selections.
Winter bicycle storage begins Nov. 27
Campus Security offers free winter storage for bicycles. Details follow:
  • Bicycles must be registered with Wartburg College. Students can register their bikes when they turn them in for storage.
  • Storage begins Monday, Nov. 27.
  • Storage is free.
  • Bicycles are dropped off and retrieved from the Campus Security Office. Bikes are stored off campus.
  • Bicycles may be retrieved around the middle of March. Campus Security will contact students who store their bikes when they can retrieve them.
  • Bicycles will not be available for check out during the winter if there is a warming trend.
  • Specific questions may be directed to campus.security@wartburg.edu.

Students’ artwork featured in exhibition

Six Wartburg students have had artworks accepted into the Cedar Valley Biennial Juried Art Exhibition, open Dec. 5 through Feb. 11, 2018, in the Law-Reddington Gallery at the Waterloo Center for the Arts. The public is invited to a reception and awards ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the center, 225 Commercial St. Students selected for this exhibition include:

Water to Thrive soup dinner 
Wartburg Water to Thrive will sponsor a soup dinner Sunday, Dec. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The dinner is free; however, donations are accepted. All donations will go toward the funding of a well.
Davis Projects for Peace 
Students with an interest in supporting and encouraging peace throughout the world should consider developing a Project for Peace. Project proposals should be creative, engaging, meaningful, and measurable. In addition, the selected Wartburg project will be implemented during summer 2018 and given $10,000 of funding/reward. An informal meeting will take place Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at 7 p.m., in the McCoy rooms. The deadline for the project is Jan. 15, 2018. Physical therapy conference
Students interested in physical therapy as a career are invited to attend the Physical Therapy as Your Future: From Application to Practice conference Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at the Medical Education & Research Facility at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City. It is being sponsored by the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Iowa. The cost is $20 per person, which includes lunch. To register or for more information, click here. The registration deadline is Jan. 8.
New podcast from President Colson
Check out From the President, a new podcast from President Darrel Colson. These podcasts allow President Colson to speak about topics important to the college and higher education in general, along with some general topics the president is frequently asked to discuss. The first podcast is titled Lutheran Higher Education and Being Called to Wartburg College.

SPIRITUAL LIFE & CAMPUS MINISTRY
 
Bible study on Thursdays
Join a new Bible study every Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel Tower Room with Pastor Ramona Bouzard and Pastor Brian Beckstrom. The Gospel of Mark will be the topic. There is no reading required before the study, but please bring your Bible along (digital or otherwise).
Upcoming Chapel services

Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. They are a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. It’s a great time to put regular worship on your schedule. Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m. This week’s Chapel service schedule looks like this:

Sunday offerings donated
Thank you for all of the Sunday offering gifts. As a result, Wartburg was able to donate $2,040.58 to Lutheran Disaster Response. Your generosity is helping us to love and serve one another within the whole church.
Candlelight Vespers
Candlelight Vespers will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel. Prelude music will begin at 6:30 p.m.
