Graven Award Convocation — Faculty and staff, please make sure your students are aware of the Graven Award Convocation honoring Dr. Elijah Anderson Tuesday, March 31, 7:30 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel. Anderson, the William K. Lanman Jr. Professor of Sociology at Yale University and one of the leading urban ethnographers in the country, will give an address. Music will be provided by Dr. Karen Black and The Wartburg Choir, directed by Dr. Lee Nelson.
Culture Week nears — Nearly 60 countries will be represented during Culture Week March 22-28. Themed
#WeAreOne, the celebration kicks off with the Culture Fair Sunday, March 22, 6:30-9 p.m., in Knights Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. The interactive event includes student performances, food samplings, calligraphy demonstrations, and a world music instrument petting zoo. Events sponsored by Wartburg’s International Student Programs Office continue all week.

KWAR marathon — KWAR-FM 89.9, Wartburg’s student-run radio station, is holding its annual 89.9-hour marathon from today, March 16, 7 p.m., through Friday, March 20, 1 p.m. A live deejay will give away at least one prize each hour.
This year's theme,
Marathon to the Future, plays off the famous Michael J. Fox movie
Back to the Future. The station will reflect on the past of KWAR and look at the future of the radio industry. Tune in at 89.9-FM, via the Wartburg Circuit

Documentary screening — Director Luis Argueta will host a screening of his latest documentary, ABRAZOS, Wednesday, March 18, 7 p.m., in Science Center 102. A question and answer session with Argueta will follow. ABRAZOS tells the transformational journey of a group of 14 U.S.-citizen children who travel from Minnesota to Guatemala to meet their grandparents for the first time. Argueta is known in Iowa for abUSed: The Postville Raid, which weaves personal stories of those affected by the 2008 immigration raid at Agriprocessors with a national debate about immigration.
Candlelight Dinner — SAFE is sponsoring a Candlelight Dinner Wednesday, March 25. Sign-up Wednesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 19, 5:15-7 p.m., in Mensa. At the event, SAFE members will discuss their organization while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. The cost for students with a board plan is $2, payable with points, declining balance, or cash. Students without a board plan may attend for $10. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.
Phil & Lit — Dr. Charles Figura, professor of physics and astronomy, will present Bright Lights in the Big City; Massive Star Formation in the Milky Way for the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society Friday, March 20, 4 p.m., in McCoy West of Saemann Student Center.
Honor Code revised — The Student Senate Academic Policies Committee and Wartburg College Honor Council recently rewrote the Honor Code with approval of Student Senate. The current revisions better define the responsibilities of students, faculty, and staff. For more information, contact Student Senate Academic Ombudsperson Alec Steils at
alec.steils@wartburg.edu. The code now reads:
“Students, faculty, and staff of Wartburg College are expected to demonstrate integrity in all endeavors. Students are expected to adhere to four essential principles:
- Submit only original work and properly cite ideas of others, including fellow students.
- Refrain from giving or receiving unauthorized aide on examinations and assignments.
- Report any act that violates these principles.
- Ask for clarification if uncertain about the expectations on a particular assignment.
Students are responsible for abiding by these principles and opposing academic dishonesty in all academic endeavors.”
Exemplary staff award — Nominations are due Wednesday, March 18, for Wartburg's Exemplary Staff Award. One administrative staff member and one support staff member are honored each year; John Wuertz and Ruth Tibbott were last year's recipients. Plant slant — The health benefits of a plant-based diet will be the topic at The W's next Lunch 'n' Learn Wednesday, March 18, noon-1 p.m., in the Wet Classroom. Dr. Nasreen Wahidi from the Waverly Health Center's Shell Rock Clinic will present.
Student Employee Appreciation Week — Wartburg will celebrate Student Employee Appreciation Week Sunday, March 22, through Saturday, March 28. Supervisors are encouraged to find a way to thank the student employees who are vital to maintaining the college's day-to-day operations. Also, stay tuned, as the 2015 Student Employee of the Year will be announced, and the award nominees will be recognized.

Student engagement report — The National Survey for Student Engagement's 2013 snapshot of Wartburg has been released. The report draws on surveys of first- and fourth-year students regarding empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education. For both groups of students, Wartburg ranked significantly higher than peer institutions in the engagement indicators of collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, and supportive environment. Retention report — The Office of Institutional Research has released a report on the impact of co-curricular participation on retention. It found the retention rate for students participating in a co-curricular program (music, athletics, and on-campus employment) is about 10 percent higher than the five-year average of the overall retention rate. Collaborative training program — Student employees and departmental supervisors are invited to the annual Collaborative Student Employee Training Sessions. This year's program,
Making the Connection, will be held twice. The first session runs Tuesday, March 24, and Tuesday, March 31, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The second will be Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m.-noon. The program consists of two components: Dr. Zak Montgomery, assistant professor in Spanish, will present

Class registration tip No. 7 — Online registration for May Term is limited to 1.25 course credits; onsite registration in the Registrar's Office is required for any enrollments that exceed the limit. If you plan to enroll in a May Term abroad that includes two courses, you will need to register for the 0.5 credit course in person. The onsite form is available from your adviser and from the Registrar’s Office. Be aware that some May Term abroad courses have prerequisites that must be taken in Winter Term.
