Advising Week upcoming — First-year students are required to meet with advisers during Advising Week, Oct. 27-31. Let advisees know how to sign up or schedule appointments with you. The goal of Advising Week goes beyond schedule confirmation/adjustment for Winter and May terms; it is an opportunity to advise students on study strategies, discuss long-term goals and career plans, and plan ahead for Wartburg West, internships, and study abroad. Advisers are expected to invite advisees who received mid-term D/F notices to discuss strategies for academic success and make referrals to the appropriate support services. The second seven-week courses start Monday, Oct. 20, and Wednesday, Nov. 5, is the last day to drop a full-term course with a W. A few seats are available in LS 110: Exploring Careers and Vocation.

Transforming Tomorrow gala — The college will kick off the Transforming Tomorrow campaign Friday, Oct.17, with a gala. The program will be live-streamed by Knight Vision at 8 p.m. Click here to watch.

Class size report — Enrollment Management has released the Fall 2014 Average Class Size Report. The current average of 20.6 students per class section is the third-lowest in the last 10 years. For class subsections, which include primarily labs, the average size drops to 18.46 students — the lowest average in that category since at least 2005.
Benefit open enrollment — The open enrollment period for 2015 benefits is Nov. 1-26. Benefit-eligible employees re-electing coverage under one of Wartburg's plans or re-electing a flexible spending account must re-enroll at www.mybenefitfusion.com during this period. Your username is your last name, and your password is the last four digits of your Social Security Number. The PPO and MCO plans have been significantly revised, while the HSA plan is unchanged. Those seeking benefit information can meet with representatives from The Accel Group Thursday, Nov. 6, 8-11 a.m.; Friday, Nov. 7, noon-2 p.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 11, 3-5 p.m., in McCoy East.
Service award nominations — Applications are due Wednesday, Nov. 12, for two awards to be bestowed during St. Elizabeth Week, Nov. 15-21. Nominate a student for the St. Elizabeth Award for Service here and a faculty or staff member for the Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service here. Recipients will be recognized during chapel Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Bach's Lunch concert — Professors will showcase their talents during the monthly “Bach’s Lunch” organ series Friday, Oct. 17. Performances by Dr. Karen Black, professor of music; Dr. Daniel Kaplunas, assistant professor of music; Dr. Scott Muntefering, assistant professor of music education; and Jim Vaux, lecturer in music, will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Wartburg Chapel. Bring your lunch, as the recital will be preceded at noon by an explanation of the program in Chapel Commons.
Wartburg Pride Day — Celebrate Wartburg Pride Day Friday, Oct. 17, by wearing your Knights apparel. Members of Students UKnight will hand out candy throughout the day to those wearing Wartburg apparel.
Women’s soccer fundraiser — The women’s soccer team will be selling Krispy Kreme donuts Saturday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m., along the Homecoming parade route, and 10:30 a.m., at the Renaissance Faire, while supplies last. Wartburg scarves also will be for sale at the Renaissance Faire from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The team is raising funds for its spring trip to Italy.
The Saint John's Bible volunteers— Volunteers are needed to serve as Knights of the Page (docents) for The Saint John's Bible, the hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible on display at Vogel Library through December. Learn about Water to Thrive — Ed Scharlau '61, founding board member of the nonprofit Water to Thrive, will discuss building wells and changing lives during the TriBeta biology honor society meeting tonight, Oct. 16, 6:45 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 214. The Department of Biology and Wartburg's Water to Thrive chapter also will be represented.

Symphony season debut — The Charming Cello, a concert by esteemed cello soloist Jay Campbell, will open the Wartburg Community Symphony season Saturday, Oct. 18, 8 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Campbell won first prize at the 2012 Concert Artist Guild Auditions at The Juilliard School. Preconcert music by the Wartburg String Quartet, directed by Dr. Daniel Kaplunas, will begin at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow Campbell’s performance. Naming ceremony — The Board of Regents approved the naming of the north and east wings of the Science Center after Dr. Ralph E. Otto '63 and his wife, Diane. The naming of Otto Science Hall will be celebrated at a public ceremony today, Oct. 16, 4 p.m., in the Science Center Courtyard. Otto, a cardiothoracic surgeon, was a regent from 1992 until his death in 2008. The Ottos established an endowed scholarship and professorship named after Otto's chemistry professor, Dr. A.W. Swensen. The center's Becker Science Hall comprises the south and west wings and is named after the late Dr. Conrad H. Becker, the college's 12th president.
Homecoming run/walk— The Early Morning Knight Run/Walk is a 3-mile event for runners and a 2-mile event for walkers during Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 18, 8 a.m. The paved route starts in Walston-Hoover Stadium and winds through campus and residential areas. Registration is $12 and includes a T-shirt. Pick up a registration form at the Information Desk. For more information contact alumni@wartburg.edu.
Student art displayed — The student art display in the Waverly McDonald’s features new works by Megan Howe ’16, ceramics and photography; Lauren Matysik ’15, photography; and Christa Kain ’16, ceramics.

Co-curricular reports — All faculty and staff have access to co-curricular reports listing student involvement by organization. Sign in at info.wartburg.edu, click on the Business & Reports tab, and choose Student Life. Select by student or organization by year and download a PDF to print or email. This membership information is submitted twice a year by student organization leaders. Updates submitted this fall are still in the process of completion. The goal is to provide additional resources regarding student involvement. Students do not have access to the files, but faculty and staff are free to share the information with students.
