NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Service Trip date auction — In need of a Valentine? Bring your checkbook to the Service Trip Date Auction tonight, Jan. 29, 8 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum! Each date up for auction will wow the crowd with a self-selected special talent. Proceeds will help pay for upcoming service trips.


Pig gone rogue
 — The Students UKnight piggy bank is missing again! It is hiding somewhere on campus. Watch for clues today, Jan. 29, starting at 9 a.m. on the Students UKnight Facebook page. If you find the piggy bank, return it to the Alumni Office for a reward!


Student W-2 and 1098-T Tax Forms
— Student W-2 and 1098-T tax forms are available to be picked up in the Business Office until noon on Friday, Jan. 30. All students employed by the college during 2014 will receive a W-2. All U.S. students will receive a 1098-T. Any forms not picked up will be mailed to the student’s home address.

Movie Knight
— See the latest movies for a price that won’t break your budget! For just $1, attend ETK’s monthly Movie Knight Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Waverly Palace Theatre. Doors open at 10 p.m. and shows start at 10:30 p.m. The movies will be announced next week.


Castle Chamber Series 
— Wartburg’s Castle Chamber Series continues Sunday, Feb. 1, 2 p.m., in Saemann Student Center’s Hagemann Castle Room, with a concert featuring pianist Marian Lee and flutist Nicole Esposito. Lee trained at The Julliard School, Moscow State Conservatory, and Johns Hopkins University and is a piano professor at St. Ambrose University. Esposito, flute professor at the University of Iowa, is an international soloist, teacher, and chamber and orchestral musician. Admission is free for Wartburg students with identification.


Faculty Brass Quintet debuts
 — A brass quintet of Wartburg music instructors will debut at a recital Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6:30 p.m., in Sandra Rada Orchestra Hall of Bachman Fine Arts Center. The free recital features six selections from the 16th through 20th centuries. The Faculty Brass Quintet includes Dr. Scott Muntefering and Jim Vaux on trumpet, Andy Harris on horn, Bard Mackey on trombone, and Richard Scheffel on tuba.


Academic Planner planning
— Student organizations with events to be included in the 2015-16 Academic Planner should email the pertinent information to Janet Huebner, The Wartburg Store manager, at janet.huebner@wartburg.edu before Wednesday, April 15.

Social Work Club seeks members
— The Social Work Club will meet tonight, Jan. 29, 6 p.m., in Old Main 201.  Anyone who loves service and wants to make a difference is invited to be a part of this up-and-coming organization. Contact KarrieAnne Burke at karrieanne.burke@wartburg.edu for more information.

Leaders wanted
— Students who are looking for leadership experience are encouraged to apply for openings on the Student Center Council executive team: president, vice-president, and treasurer. The Student Center Council, which plans food-related events in Saemann Student Center, meets Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m., in The Hub conference room. Contact Christian Terry at c.kremerterry@wartburg.edu for more information. No application or previous experience is necessary, but attendance at weekly meetings is strongly recommended.  


Study abroad deadline
 — Applications to study abroad Fall Term 2015 or Winter Term 2016 are due Monday, Feb. 2. Direct questions to Kathy Traetow, study abroad programs office coordinator, at kathy.traetow@wartburg.edu.

TriByKnight Triathlon — Register for the TriByKnight Triathlon at the main desk of The W by Saturday, Jan. 31, to participate in the Saturday, May 2 event, which includes an indoor 300-yard swim, 15-mile bike ride, and 5K run. Registration is $45, increasing to $55 after Saturday, and includes a swim cap, moisture-wicking T-shirt, race goodie bag, and post-race meal and drink at The Fainting Goat. Participants can compete as individuals or a relay team. Click here for more information.


Meistersinger choir concert
 — Internationally acclaimed composer René Clausen will serve as guest clinician at the 2015 Meistersinger Honor Choir Festival at Wartburg Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31. More than 400 select high-school singers from throughout the Midwest will attend. A finale concert, Saturday, 7:30 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium, will feature a choir of festival participants and Wartburg Choir members, the Rosemount (Minnesota) High School Concert Choir, and Wartburg choral ensembles. Wartburg College Dance Marathon
— Monday, Jan. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 31, is FTK (For the Kids) Week! Sign up for WCDM7 in Saemann Student Center from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m daily. Those who register during FTK Week will be entered into a raffle for an iPad mini. Dancers can earn additional entries for every $20 they raise during the week. Dancers who raise $200 during FTK Week will be able throw a pie in the face of an executive team member the day of the big event.


Alumnus to speak in Waterloo
 — The Waterloo Catholics Winter at the Cellar program will feature Jacob Kohlhaas ’04 presenting on The Church and Gay Catholics tonight, Jan. 29, 7 p.m., at the lounge below CU restaurant, 320 E. Fourth Street, Waterloo. Kohlhaas, instructor of moral theology at Loras College, teaches courses in Christian values, social justice, and sexual ethics. Find information here. French film
 festival — Enjoy Ernest & Celestine, a hand-drawn animated film about interspecies friendship, tonight, Jan. 29, 6 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 116, as part of the Tournées Film Festival. GriGris, about a male dancer with a paralyzed leg who overcomes all odds, will be featured Tuesday, Feb. 3. Thanks to a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange, the French Club and the Film Society are hosting the five-film festival. Phil and Lit
— The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Jan. 30, 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The Rev. Brian Beckstrom, college pastor, will present A College of the Church for the 21st Century


Artist Series show
 — On the 56th anniversary of their final performance, the music of legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Jiles Richardson (better known as The Big Bopper) will come to life Monday, Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m., on Neumann Auditorium's stage. John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party recreates the trio’s 1959 performance at the iconic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. The rock ‘n’ roll pioneers died in a plane crash the next morning a few miles outside of Clear Lake. For more information, visit www.wartburg.edu/artist

Segregation Simulation Week — Understand the struggle of segregation with activities Feb. 1-7 as part of Black History Month. During the week, students will be separated by their eye color. Signs will direct them to bathrooms, water fountains, and more that can or can not be used based on one’s eye color. Dance Marathon Night at the Waterloo Black Hawks
— Join Wartburg College Dance Marathon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Waterloo Black Hawks Game. Ticket orders and payment are due to the Business Office Thursday, Feb. 5. Tickets are $10, with $3 going to WCDM. Email wcdm@wartburg.edu for an order form.


Get a taste of the Master's
— The W, with the help of USA-certified swim coach Janet McCullough, is hosting a new Master's Swim Clinic Sunday, Feb. 15, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants will learn new in- and out-of-water exercises and complete a video review with feedback for improved efficiency, endurance, and speed. Cost is $60. Register online or at the Welcome Desk before Wednesday, Feb. 11.       


“Tri" your hardest
— The W is hosting a 12-week Triathlon Training class starting Wednesday, Feb. 11. USA Triathlon certified coach Carrie Tysdahl will teach the class focusing on run form, cycling powers, transitions, swim techniques, and more. The cost is $87 for members.      


Wartburg Open renamed
— The Wartburg Open has been renamed in honor of Chelsey Henkenius '14, a track and field team member who died Dec. 27 in a car accident in Lake City. Additional information is available here.   


Literary symposium planned
— A series of events focused on Striking Languages: Language in Research, Expression, and the Professional World is planned for the first week of February. Events include

  • The Michealson, Briner and Kildahl Literary Symposium, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum with guest speakers
    • Dr. Patrick Malloy, Hawkeye Community College, Calamities of Uncertain Guests and Second-hand Clothes: Images of the Early AIDS Epidemic from Swahili Newspaper Poetry
    • Dr. Elise Dubord, University of Northern Iowa, Language, Immigration, and Labor
    • Dr. Thomas Farmer, University of Iowa, We Never Stop Learning Language: Adaptation to Novel of Atypical Linguistic Events.
  • Flow: A Multilingual and Musical Exploration of Sound and Meaning (musical and spoken word performance), Tuesday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel.
  • Language Matters: Language, Professional Advantage, and Empowerment for Global Engagement (roundtable discussion), Thursday, Feb. 5, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Luther Hall Room 330.


Postage changes
— The United States Postal Service now requires a tracking number to ship all Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, First Class, Standard Post, Media Mail, and Library Mail. Regular rates will still apply for all Priority Mail packages. Other pieces (non-Priority Mail under 13 ounces) will be charged an additional rate of $1.05. Additional changes are expected. Please call Darla Hamann at 352-8263 for additional information. The procedures are very complicated and more will be learned as implementation begins.
