NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Wartburg College Dance Marathon — Monday, Jan. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 31, is FTK (For the Kids) Week! Sign up for WCDM7 in Saemann Student Center from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m daily. Those who register during FTK Week will be entered into a raffle for an iPad mini. Dancers can earn additional entries for every $20 they raise during the week. Dancers who raise $200 during FTK Week will be able throw a pie in the face of an executive team member the day of the big event. 


STEM career fair 
– Pathways and the Center for Community Engagement will host a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) career fair Tuesday, Jan. 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Heritage and St. Elizabeth rooms of Saemann Student Center. STEM students seeking internships or full-time jobs after graduation, or who plan to attend graduate/professional school, are encouraged to attend. Dress to impress and bring an updated resume.


Interview Day
— Wartburg partners with members of the Iowa College Recruiting Network to host an Interview Day for Iowa private college students seeking full-time and internship positions. This year’s event will be Friday, Feb. 13, in Des Moines. Students have until 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28 to submit resumes to potential employers. Those selected then sign up for an interview. Currently, 29 employers are registered, with openings for about 50 jobs and internships. Students can utilize Pathways Center for assistance creating and fine-tuning resumes in advance of the deadline. Run for office
— Interested in running for 2015-16 student body president, vice president, recorder, or treasurer? Applications, due today, Jan. 26, are available online. For more information, contact senate@wartburg.edu or Teri Mueller, student body president, at teri.mueller@wartburg.edu.


Dance Marathon Night at the Waterloo Black Hawks
— Join Wartburg College Dance Marathon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Waterloo Black Hawks Game. Ticket orders and payment are due to the Business Office Thursday, Feb. 5. Tickets are $10, with $3 going to WCDM. Email wcdm@wartburg.edu for an order form.

Service Trip date auction
— In need of a Valentine? Bring your checkbook to the Service Trip Date Auction Thursday, Jan. 29, 8 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum! Each date up for auction will wow the crowd with a self-selected special talent. Proceeds will help pay for upcoming service trips.          


Postage changes
— Beginning today, Jan. 26, the United States Postal Service will require a tracking number to ship all Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, First Class, Standard Post, Media Mail, and Library Mail. Regular rates will still apply for all Priority Mail packages. Other pieces (non-Priority Mail under 13 ounces) will be charged an additional rate of $1.05. Additional changes are expected. Please call Darla Hamann at 352-8263 for additional information. The procedures are very complicated and more will be learned as implementation begins.


Wartburg Open renamed
— The Wartburg Open has been renamed in honor of Chelsey Henkenius '14, a track and field team member who died Dec. 27 in a car accident in Lake City. Additional information is available here.   


French film festival
— Thanks to a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange, the French Club and the Film Society will host free showings of French films during the Tournées Film Festival Thursday, Jan. 29, and Feb. 3, 12, 17 and 25, 6 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 116. Context for the films will be provided by students of Wartburg’s French film course. Enjoy Ernest & Celestine, a hand-drawn animated film about interspecies friendship Thursday, Jan. 29. “Tri" your hardest
— The W is hosting a 12-week Triathlon Training class starting Wednesday, Feb. 11. USA Triathlon certified coach Carrie Tysdahl will teach the class focusing on run form, cycling powers, transitions, swim techniques, and more. The cost is $87 for members. 


Segregation Simulation Week
— Understand the struggle of segregation with activities Feb. 1-7 as part of Black History Month. During the week, students will be separated by their eye color. Signs will direct them to bathrooms, water fountains, and more that can or can not be used based on one’s eye color. Students can sign up and learn more about the week’s activities today, Jan. 26, in Saemann Student Center during dining hours. Get a taste of the Master's
— The W, with the help of USA-certified swim coach Janet McCullough, is hosting a new Master's Swim Clinic Sunday, Feb. 15, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants will learn new in- and out-of-water exercises and complete a video review with feedback for improved efficiency, endurance, and speed. Cost is $60. Register online or at the Welcome Desk before Wednesday, Feb. 11.       


Phil and Lit
— The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Jan. 30, 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The Rev. Brian Beckstrom, college pastor, will present A College of the Church for the 21st Century.           


Literary symposium planned
— A series of events focused on Striking Languages: Language in Research, Expression, and the Professional World is planned for the first week of February. Events include

  • The Michealson, Briner and Kildahl Literary Symposium, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum with guest speakers
    • Dr. Patrick Malloy, Hawkeye Community College, Calamities of Uncertain Guests and Second-hand Clothes: Images of the Early AIDS Epidemic from Swahili Newspaper Poetry
    • Dr. Elise Dubord, University of Northern Iowa, Language, Immigration, and Labor
    • Dr. Thomas Farmer, University of Iowa, We Never Stop Learning Language: Adaptation to Novel of Atypical Linguistic Events.
  • Flow: A Multilingual and Musical Exploration of Sound and Meaning (musical and spoken word performance), Tuesday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel.
  • Language Matters: Language, Professional Advantage, and Empowerment for Global Engagement (round table discussion), Thursday, Feb. 5, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Luther Hall Room 330.

Wartburg West deadline
— Applications are due Friday, Feb. 20, for second- and third-year students considering spending a semester at Wartburg West Fall Term  2015 or Winter Term 2016. The deadline for first-year students applying to participate in the Sophomore Program in Fall Term 2015 is Wednesday, March 11. Apply at wartburg.edu/west. Study in Berlin
— The Freie Universität Berlin is accepting applications for its FU-BEST (Berlin European Studies) program for Fall Term 2015 and Winter Term 2016. There is no language prerequisite for participation in this program; all participants are obligated to enroll on-site in German language training at their level. Courses cover a variety of disciplines. Participants will spend a week in Hamburg/Copenhagen or Regensburg/Vienna, take local field trips, and attend cultural events. Applications for Fall Term 2015 are due April 1. The deadline is Oct. 15 for Winter Term 2016. Visit fubest.org for more information on courses, lodging, and application materials.
