Variety act tonight — ETK will host John Cassidy tonight, Jan. 8, 8 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. The balloon artist will perform a variety act with comedy and magic. Admission is free.

Blogging on faith
 — A new blog, Faith@Wartburg, features original content from students, faculty, and staff. Sponsored by Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry, the blog is run by students. Contact site curator Nichole Lyons ’15 at nichole.lyons@wartburg.edu to contribute or for more information.


Audition for Follow the Sun
— Auditions for the Wartburg Players production Follow the Sun, a series of children’s stories from the South Pacific, Central Asia, Africa, and South America, will be Tuesday, Jan. 13, and Wednesday, Jan. 14, 7-9 p.m., in Luther Hall 331. The curtain goes up March 26 and 27, 7 p.m., and March 28, 2 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum.


Carnegie Foundation honor
 — Wartburg is one of 240 colleges and universities honored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for its commitment to community outreach and service-learning. The Community Engagement Classification recognizes schools with quality institutional outreach and community engagement that aligns among mission, culture, leadership, resources, and practices. Wartburg was a member of the inaugural class of 62 institutions receiving the Community Engagement Classification in 2006. The college earned the reclassification, valid through 2025, following a rigorous application process. Click here for a full release.


Winter woes
 — The south entrance to Old Main will be closed until Monday, Jan. 12, in an effort to conserve heat. Please access the building using the north doors. 


Make the magazine
— Wartburg's student-produced magazine, Axiom, is looking for enthusiastic writers, editors, and photographers to cover fashion, lifestyle, culture, and college news. An informational meeting will be tonight, Jan. 8, 7 p.m., in the newsroom (McElroy Center 132). Contributors will write trend reports, how-to articles, lifestyle articles, first-person essays, and original feature stories. If you aren’t afraid to go the extra mile to reach one more source, add one more piece of advice, or perform one more line edit, Axiom wants you. Recipes From Home 
— The deadline is Friday, Jan. 16 for students, faculty, and staff to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2015-16 Mensa menu! Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides, and desserts can be emailed to jill.everding@wartburg.edu or dropped in the Mensa suggestion box. Include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa, and the student body will vote for their favorites to be considered for next year’s menu. 


Catholic Mass 
— Catholic Mass will be tonight, Jan. 8, 9 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel.


FCA group forms 
— Strengthen your faith through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a new organization on campus. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to a meeting featuring guest speaker Aaron Thomas tonight, Jan. 8, 9 p.m., in Levick Arena. Thomas is the son of the late Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas. Led by student-athletes, FCA encourages coaches, student-athletes, and all students to serve through fellowship in the church. Club activities will include Bible studies, community service events, and discussions based on speakers. 


Bible study begins
 — Explore The Story of Jesus According to Matthew in a six-week Bible study sponsored by Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry that begins today, Jan. 8, 11:30 a.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 215. The Bible study will help answer questions about what Jesus was like, what he taught, who he claimed to be, and what it means for us. The group will meet Wednesdays, 8-9 p.m., and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. No background knowledge is necessary to join the discussion. Questions can be directed to Pastor Brian Beckstrom at brian.beckstrom@wartburg.edu.


Exhibit opens
— Creations formed from found and appropriated objects and clay-covered debris will be featured at an exhibition opening Friday, Jan. 9, at Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery in Bachmann Fine Arts Center. “Ballast,” showcasing creations by Gratia Brown, will run through Feb. 13. A reception will be Thursday, Feb. 12, 7-9 p.m. Brown is a resident artist and lecturer in ceramics at the University of North Dakota. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. 


Castle Chamber Series
 — The Castle Chamber Series continues Sunday, Jan. 11 with a concert featuring soprano Dr. Jennifer Larson and pianist Dr. Jeffrey Price. The program, Schubertiade on the Rocks, with a Twist, will be at 2 p.m. in Saemann Student Center’s Hagemann Castle Room. Admission is free for Wartburg students with an ID. The program features well-loved and lesser-known works of Franz Schubert as well as the premiere of works by Price, an accomplished composer. Wartburg professor of music Dr. Eric Wachmann will perform on clarinet.

Senate scholarship
 — The Student Senate Leadership Scholarship application is now available. In the spirit of the college's mission statement, Student Senate annually funds two $500 scholarships for Wartburg students who exemplify the qualities of leadership and service. Current second- and third-year students are eligible to apply. Applications can be found online. For more information, contact senate@wartburg.edu.

2014 alumna passes away
— Chelsey Henkenius, a 2014 graduate and Lake City native, died Saturday, Dec. 27, in a car accident in Lake City. She earned her biology degree in three years and was a member of the track and field team.


Summer courses
— Registration is open for courses offered during summer 2015. Forms are available at the Registrar’s Office (Luther Hall 216) or My.Wartburg. For more information, call the Registrar's Office at 352-8281.


Spiritual retreat
— Want to recharge your faith? SALT, Campus Ministry’s service and leadership team, is hosting a retreat at Camp EWALU in Strawberry Point from 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, through noon Saturday, Jan. 24. It will include activities, spiritual reflection, and information about faith resources on campus. There is no cost to attend, but you must RSVP by Friday, Jan. 16, to brian.beckstrom@wartburg.edu.


Marriage preparation
— Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry will offer Preparing for Marriage workshops on four Sundays during Winter Term: Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, and Feb. 15. The workshops, held 6-7 p.m. in Chapel Commons, will focus on foundations for a healthy marriage. All are welcome to the free sessions.
