Juice schedule for summer
The Juice will run every other week throughout the summer, and as needed for important news. The schedule will be June 11 and 25, July 9 and 23, and Aug. 13. Weekly Juice emails will begin again on Aug. 20. Please send in your items by 4 p.m. the Thursday before publication. If you have important items that may need to run immediately, please contact Stephanie Boeding directly.  
NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Personnel Advisory Committee to meet
The Personnel Advisory Committee will meet Thursday, May 24, at 2 p.m. in LIB 352. Agenda items include retirement webinars, 2018 staff retreat, Milestones event, staff handbook, and an open forum.
Summer hours begin May 29
Summer hours will begin Tuesday, May 29, and end Friday, Aug. 24. Wartburg office hours during this time will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Students to present on Religion Across Cultures
Kayla Phelps and Ali Morrow will be presenting on their RE 373 Religion Across Cultures experiences during Winter Term on Tuesday, May 22, at noon in McCoy East. Kayla studied in Spain, while Ali studied in Chile. All are welcome to attend.
May Term music concerts
All are invited to the May Term music concerts this week. The May Term Choir Concert will be at Wartburg Chapel at 4 p.m. Monday, May 21. The May Term Band Concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, outside on the South Campus Mall (rain location is in Neumann Auditorium).

Farewell reception for Dr. Erika Lindgren
Please join the Department of History for a farewell reception honoring Dr. Erika Lindgren, associate professor of history, for her years of service to the college. The reception will be Monday, May 21, 2-3:30 p.m., in the Chapel Commons.
Golden Knight Awards 
Dress your best for the annual Golden Knight Awards and help celebrate the athletic achievements from the 2017-18 school year Monday, May 21, 7 p.m., in the Lyceum. The event will also be streamed on Knight Vision.
 
Performance appraisal forms
Performance appraisal forms are available on the InfoCenter under Employment, Forms and Procedures, Performance Appraisal Forms. Performance appraisals are to be submitted no later than June 30, generally covering the working period of June 1, 2017, through May 31, 2018. Direct questions to Human Resources.
Wartburg Store to close for inventory
The Wartburg Store will be conducting its annual physical inventory May 29-June 1. The store will be closed May 31-June 1 to finish this initiative. Thank you for planning visits to the store around these dates.
Marketing class survey 
The May Term Trends in Marketing class is collecting feedback from consumers on the latest trends in the marketing field and how consumers perceive them. Please click here to take this short survey. If you have already completed the survey, please consider sharing it with others in your network.

Wicked Problems Challenge 

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the college’s first Wicked Problems Challenge. On RICE Day, five groups presented their Wicked Problem ideas to a panel of reviewers. All five groups were accepted into the Wartburg College Incubator for continued work and support into the next academic year. The following projects received funding from the Center for Community Engagement:

  • Ashley Reynolds/Bio Bucks
  • Madison Bloker/Bound Blessings
  • Collins Kalyebi/Heritage Kid Pad

The CCE will launch another Wicked Problems Challenge in the fall.

Sanctuary during May Term
Sanctuary on Wednesdays will be the only service offered on campus during May Term. Join us in the Chapel Commons (basement) for snacks at 8:45 p.m. and a service at 9 p.m. All are welcome!

PROFESSIONAL NOTES
 
Dr. Karen Black, Rudi Inselmann Endowed Professor of Organ, had her collection of organ introductions, Shine Like the Sun, published by Augsburg Fortress Publishing. Black also was elected to a two-year term as regional councillor of the North Central Region of the American Guild of Organists, where she will represent the region on the National Council.  

In the May Term Japan trip, Dr. Kunihiko Terasawa and 12 Wartburg students visited Kosei Gakuin High school May 18 in Tokyo, founded by the progressive Buddhist group Rissho Koseikai, which awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in 2017 to President of Lutheran World Federation, Bishop Munib Younan in the Holy Land who visited Wartburg in March 2018. We visited their Judo class and attended calligraphy class. In English class, each Wartburg student had his or her own table and discussed with high school students about images of U.S.-Japan, future carrier vision, choice of major, sports, friendship, hobby, etc.
 
 
WARTBURG IN THE NEWS
 

Three Wartburg students assisted with the Maddie Poppe Hometown Parade and Concert last week in Butler County. McKenzie Kielman ’19 and Matt Ohl ’19 assisted the “American Idol” TV crew as PAs, and Lexi Bodzioch ’19 worked with Wartburg visual media manager Julie Drewes ’90 as official photographers for the Clarksville community during the event.

Dr. Caryn D. Riswold, professor of religion at Illinois College, will join the Wartburg College faculty as a professor of religion serving as the McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission. Her appointment begins with the 2018-19 academic year. Riswold, who started at Illinois College in 2002, has taught more than a dozen different religion and women and gender studies courses. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University (South Dakota) in 1993, a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Claremont School of Theology in 1995 and a Master of Theology and Doctor of Philosophy from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago in 1997 and 2000, respectively.

Peter Brennan ’18 will deliver the student address at the Wartburg College Commencement on Sunday, May 27. Wartburg President Darrel Colson chose Brennan, who is majoring in biology, to give the remarks on behalf of the Class of 2018 at the ceremony, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Hoover Fieldhouse & Track in the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center. 

Tanner Eckhart ’18 pitched a shutout for the Wartburg baseball team in the Iowa Conference semifinals, as reported by the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

David Flammang, a Wartburg facilities technician, built the guitar that "American Idol" contestant Maddie Poppe regularly uses on the show, as reported by KWWL.

The new Wartburg Incubator and its Wicked Problems Challenge were featured in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Ashlyn Bagge ’18 finished second in the 10,000 meters at the Drake Relays, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
