NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

St. Elizabeth Week — Participate in community activism and service during St. Elizabeth Week, Nov. 15-21. Organized by the Volunteer Action Center, the week will include activities — developed by student organizations — that focus on efforts to alleviate hunger and homelessness. A launch event featuring live music and prizes will be Saturday, 6-8 p.m., in Cardinal Commons. Other highlights include the CROP Walk Sunday, 2 p.m., at The W; the Voices of the Issues panel Tuesday, 11:30 a.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 214; and the presentation of service awards during chapel Wednesday, 10:15 a.m. Click here for more information, including a full schedule.


Davis Projects for Peace
 — Davis Projects for Peace is offering a prize of up to $10,000 for peace projects proposed by undergraduate students to be completed in summer 2015. Encourage students to attend an informational meeting Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7:30 p.m., in McCoy East of Saemann Student Center. Service trip application extension 
— The service trip participant application deadline has been extended to noon Tuesday, Nov. 18. Applications and trip descriptions can be found at www.wartburg.edu/servicetrips. On trips across the country, students will take on topics such as social justice, environmental awareness, homelessness, and poverty. Contact servicetrips@wartburg.edu with questions. 


Thanksgiving food drive
 — The Wartburg Store and Black Student Union are teaming up to help the Northeast Iowa Food Bank fight hunger. Students, faculty, and staff are asked to drop off nonperishable food items at The Wartburg Store or in The Hub, Saemann Student Center, through Monday, Nov. 24. Donors at The Wartburg Store will receive a 20-percent-off coupon. Contact Nasr Madar at nasr.madar@wartburg.edu with questions.


Dueling pianos
 — ETK will host a dueling pianos show Tuesday, Nov. 18, 7-8 p.m., in Knights Ballroom. Bring some friends and enjoy a snack and good tunes for free.


From the Business Office
— Students wanting a refund check of their student account before Thanksgiving break will need to request it by noon on Friday, Nov. 21. The check will be available after noon on Monday, Nov. 24.


Art unveiling
 — Portrait at Eighteen by Diego Lasansky will be unveiled as the latest addition to the college art collection Friday, Nov. 14, 1:15 p.m., on the third floor of Vogel Library. The piece will be given from the Lasansky family in honor of William S. Fruehling ’61. In 2011, Fruehling donated For an Eye an Eye by Mauricio Lasansky, Diego’s grandfather. In 2012, Guiseppe VerdiAlbert EinsteinLouis Pasteur, and Indian Chief were donated to the collection. All are invited to attend. Read about Diego Lasansky’s work here.

Trans* discussion — Join Alliance Wednesday, Nov. 19, 8 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center's Buckmaster Room, for discussion on trans* issues and hear what identity means to one trans* student at Wartburg. 

National Trans* Day 
— Alliance will host a candlelight vigil Thursday, Nov. 20, 8 p.m., by Wartburg Chapel to remember all trans* people lost to violence and hate crimes this year. The vigil will be led by Pastor Brian Beckstrom.
 
Vagina Monologues auditions
 — Auditions for The Vagina Monologues are Thursday, Nov. 20, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sign up at the Alliance office in The Hub, Saemann Student Center, for a 10-minute slot. In the form of an episodic play, The Vagina Monologues tells women’s stories of domestic violence, rape, and other issues. The production, set for Feb. 12-14, 8 p.m., will raise funds for Cedar Valley Friends of the Family, a local women’s shelter, as a part of V-Day, a worldwide anti-violence awareness movement. Vocation webinar
 — A Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education webinar will be Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1-2 p.m., in Vogel Library Classroom 1. Hosted by the Vocations Leadership Team, the webinar will feature a conversation with Steve Garber, author of Visions of Vocation: Common Grace for the Common Good. Garber is the founder and principal of the Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation, and Culture. Contact T.J. Student presentation 
— All are welcome as Merry Gillaspie ’15 presents her Scholars Program project, How much POGIL is too much?, today, Nov. 13, 6:30–7:30 p.m., in Science Center 102. 


Law professor visits 
— University of Iowa law professor Christina Bohannan will lead a discussion today, Nov. 13, 7 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 215. Bohannan teaches torts, copyright law, and conflict of laws, as well as advanced seminars in intellectual property law. She will discuss law school and careers in intellectual property law, including patent law. Knightliters concert 
— The Knightliters Jazz Band opens its season Saturday, Nov. 15, with a free concert at 8 p.m. in Saemann Student Center’s McCaskey Lyceum. The Knightliters will perform jazz standards Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham and Groovin’ High by Dizzy Gillespie, as well as works by Iowa composer Paul Clark. The group’s autumn concert also will feature student soloists and the Wartburg Flute Choir under the direction of Dominique Cawley.


Castle Chamber Series
 — The Castle Chamber Series: Music in the Afternoon will feature Iowa-based group Trio 826 Sunday, Nov. 16, 2 p.m., in Saemann Student Center’s Castle Room. Enjoy works by Purcell, Beethoven, and more on the violin, viola, and cello. Tickets are available at the door for $10; students can attend for free with their ID.


CROP Walk 
— The Wartburg-Waverly CROP Walk for hunger awareness is Sunday, Nov. 16, 2 p.m., starting at The W. For more information or to donate, contact Felicia Finley at felicia.finley@wartburg.edu.


Phil and Lit 
— Dr. Erik Grayson, assistant professor of English, will present The Hidden Etymology of Coetzee's Disgrace to the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society Friday, Nov. 14, 4 p.m., in McCoy West, Saemann Student Center.

Criminology and Sociology Club — Wartburg’s newest organization, the Criminology and Sociology Club, will host its inaugural meeting Tuesday, Nov. 18., 8-9 p.m., in McCoy West, Saemann Student Center. Suggestions regarding club goals and activities will be welcomed.


Day of remembrance
 — SAFE and Alliance invite all to join in a day of silence and remembrance Tuesday, Nov. 25, by dressing in all black to remember those lost to suicide. A discussion will be 8-9:30 p.m. in McCoy East, Saemann Student Center. To sign up for the day's activities, email safe@wartburg.edu with your name, office, and the name of any loved ones you would like to represent. On average 1,100 college students a year die by suicide in the U.S. In 2012, 4,872 people between the ages of 15-24 committed suicide, 30 percent being LGBT. 


Exhibit open
Erzulie: Mirroring the Lives of Haitian Women is on display through Dec. 14 in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery in Bachman Fine Arts Center. A reception will be Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. The exhibit features works on loan from the Waterloo Center for the Arts’ Haitian Art Collection, the world’s largest public collection of Haitian art. The exhibition, curated by Brittany Deal, Wartburg art gallery director, was designed to challenge preconceived notions of Haitian Vodou through paintings, drapo (beaded flags), spiritual items, and interpretive panels. 


New major announced 
— The Department of Journalism & Communication has designed a digital cinema and production major to launch Fall Term 2015. The program will help students develop screenwriting, producing, and directing skills for digital video and audio media. Students will create documentaries and short films as well as learn how to produce and engineer audio programs and music. Watch a video and read a release for more information.


Make it a caring Christmas 
— The Department of Social Work's Holiday Shoppe provides gifts for those who otherwise may not receive any. More than 540 kids benefitted last year. Look for Christmas trees around campus decorated with ornaments by age group. Gifts can be dropped off at the department's office on Old Main's second floor or left by the Christmas trees. Festival of Trees 
— The Wartburg Community Festival of Trees will brighten the halls of the Wartburg College Classroom Technology Center Dec. 2-17, and more participation from Wartburg groups is encouraged. To decorate a tree, register at www.wartburg.edu/trees by Friday, Nov. 21. Student mini-retreat —
 A student mini-retreat to explore life, interests, skills, and purpose will be Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22, at Camp EWALU in Strawberry Point.
