RICE Day – The fifth annual RICE Day celebration will be held Thursday, April 7. Nearly 350 students will present 500 projects as part of the day. Research, Internship, and Creative Endeavor (RICE) Day recognizes student achievements in and out of the classroom, and showcases academic and co-curricular pursuits across disciplines. To enable participation by the entire campus community throughout the day, classes will not meet on April 7. A PDF of the day’s program will be posted prior to the events at www.wartburg.edu/rice. A limited number of printed programs will also be placed at various locations around campus that day.

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Retirement open house — An open house to honor Ann Henninger, Jo Foster, Mary Peters, and Julie Paladino upon their retirement will be Thursday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Castle Room of Saemann Student Center.
Presidential Forum — Notes from the March 30 Presidential Forum are now posted on the Info Center under President’s Reports – Campus Communication. The final forum of the term will be held Tuesday, April 26, at 11:30 a.m.
Wartburg Store discount policy — Shop, swipe and save at The Wartburg Store! The discount policy has been revised as follows: Faculty, staff, retirees and Eisenach Village residents are eligible to receive a 10 percent discount off every purchase when using their all-campus spending account as payment. Discounts will no longer be given when paying via cash, check, gift certificate, credit or debit card.
Phil and Lit Society – The next Winter Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Friday, April 8, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West of the Saemann Student Center. Cara Donels '16, a biology major, will present The Global Context of Healthcare Spending in the United States. Madalynn McKelvey '17, an engineering science major, will present Vibration Physics: Models and Applications. The society meets most Friday afternoons during the academic year for presentations by a colleague in an informal, convivial setting. Beverages and snacks are available.
Staff Appreciation Reception — All are invited to attend the Staff Appreciation Reception honoring Jean Buckingham and Lori Backer for their hard work and dedication to Wartburg. This come-and-go event will be Tuesday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Castle Room. There will be snacks and refreshments provided. Contact senate@wartburg.edu with any questions.

Equipment and technology requests — The President’s Budget Advisory Council has recommended approximately $170,000 in equipment and technology requests to be funded for 2016-17. Requests totaled mored than $535,000, and only items deemed critical were approved. Some requests were approved at a level less than the original request. Details of department requests will be received by division vice presidents by Friday, April 8, and subsequently communicated to department budget officers.
Wartburg Women — Wartburg Women will hold its annual spring meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Greenwood. No RSVP is required, and all members are invited to attend. Wartburg Women funds scholarships by filling more than 300 annual orders of baked goods and fruit baskets for Wartburg students. In its 74-year history, the organization has contributed more than $123,000 in scholarships. It also funds an endowed scholarship that last year awarded $1,000. Wartburg Women offers social opportunities including potlucks, book reviews, luncheons and family outings. Officers for 2015-2016 are Marcia Haugen, president; Barb Piel, vice president; Meredith Keelan, secretary; and Marnie Hubbard, treasurer.
Pickle ball tournament — The W will host a doubles pickleball tournament for students, faculty, and staff during May Term. Any combination of co-ed teams is allowed. Teams will be put into pools for round-robin play, with dates TBD once pools are set. Equipment is provided. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. Sign up by April 15 at the front desk of The W or online at www.the-w.org; fee is $10 per team. Contact Kyle Kregel with questions.

Seeking pets for event — Wartburg's Suicide Awareness for Everyone (SAFE) and Counseling Services will hold a "Stress-free Zone" on Monday, April 11, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the campus mall. Rain location is in Chapel Commons. If you would be willing to bring your pet to play with students during part of that time, please email kaitlyn.behnken@wartburg.edu.
Midnight Breakfast volunteers — To help our students prepare for their finals, Wartburg will hold the Midnight Breakfast on Monday, April 11, from 11 p.m. to midnight. Volunteers are needed to help serve this special breakfast and wish our students well on their finals. Send an email to Laura Davis if you are able to volunteer. Volunteers need to report to the Mensa by 10:45 p.m. April 11.

PROFESSIONAL NOTES
Karen Thalacker, senior lecturer in business law and pre-law adviser, wrote a guest essay for The Des Moines Register titled, "You can wipe acquittals, dismissals from Iowa Courts Online." Click here to read the piece.
Dr. Bill Withers, professor of journalism and communication, gave the keynote address at the quarterly conference of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) in Des Moines on March 24 at the Embassy Suites ballrooms. Withers spoke on trends in workplace culture and engagement and change-management. MPI is a regional association organized specifically for conference and event-management professionals throughout the Midwest.
The Rev. Brian Beckstrom wrote an article called “Decisions, decisions, decisions” about the difficulties facing college and high school seniors as they contemplate their futures. It can be found on the ELCA’s Living Lutheran blog. He also made a presentation entitled “Forming the whole person; vocation, leadership and young adults" and participated in the annual Covenant Cluster consultation March 16-19 in Ashland, Neb. The annual event brings together ministry professionals from many ELCA ministries.
Dr. Ann Henninger has been selected to receive the 2016 Faculty Excellence Award, given by the Iowa American Association of University Women. This award recognizes women faculty’s exemplary contributions toward creating a climate of gender equity in education in the state of Iowa. The selection committee looks for excellence in teaching, advising, scholarship, and service; continual efforts to develop new understandings and competencies in a discipline; and outstanding leadership in service that addresses the needs of students. Dr. Henninger is a longtime member of the Waverly AAUW branch, serving in almost every officer role and as a board member for a number of years. She will be recognized for this award at the Iowa AAUW state conference in Des Moines on Sunday, April 17.
Dr. Kit Kleinhans, McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission, led a seminar on “Reformation and the Empowerment of Women” in Wittenberg, Germany, March 12-19. Seminar participants were 16 women church leaders from nine countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America.

Congratulations to Seth Gage, assistant director of Financial Aid, and his wife, Jesicah, on the birth of their son Daxton James. Daxton was born Wednesday, March 23, weighing 9.3 pounds and measuring 21.5 inches long. He joins big brothers Kaiden and Tate.
