HR and Payroll Restructuring — The college's HR & Payroll Office will now manage and administer our employee benefit plans. We have utilized The Accel Group as our benefits consultant for several years, and they will still work on certain projects for Wartburg College. Any questions regarding benefits can be directed to Amy Wilson, who has now assumed the role of benefits administrator. A new part-time position will be created in the HR & Payroll Office; watch the website for details. These changes will save the college roughly $22,000 per year and allow us to serve our employees' benefits needs more effectively.  

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

SCAA winners — The winner of the Dr. Peggy & Kendall Pruisner Scholarly and Creative Activity Award is Dr. Karen Black. The winner of the Dr. Peggy & Kendall Pruisner Early Career Scholarly and Creative Activity Award is David Herwaldt. Black will present her research on March 11 at 4 p.m., and Herwaldt will present his research on March 18 at 4 p.m., both as part of the Phil & Lit series. 

German Institute applications — The German Institute seeks applications for funds to support activities/endeavors related to German and/or Germany. For 2016-17, $5,000 is available from external sources. In the past, the Institute has funded enrichments to May Term trips to Germany, the German film festival, learning materials for the faculty/staff heritage tour, and subsidized student travel to Germany for study abroad. Applications for the full amount of available funds will likely not be supported in full. Applications are due March 15. Awards will be announced by April 1. Click here to see application details. Institutional Advancement restructuring — Inspired by the college’s recent review of expenses and revenues, and in an effort to better position the division to meet its goals moving forward, Institutional Advancement is announcing several changes effective on or about June 1. Giant Heart Valentine Cookies — Order a giant heart cookie for your sweetheart throughGET online ordering (use the "catering take out" store) through Monday, Feb. 15. Cookies will be available to pick up in the Den. The cookies can be decorated with your choice of message: “Be Mine,” “Hugs & Kisses,” or “My BFF.” If you have questions or want to add a personal message, call the dining office at ext. 8303.

Wartburg West fall classes — Dr. Brian McQueen will teach two classes through Wartburg West in fall 2016: The Metropolis and Crime & Deviance. McQueen will spend three weeks teaching onsite in Denver and facilitate the other portion through distance learning. Phil and Lit – The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Friday, Feb. 5, at 4 p. m. in McCoy West of the Saemann Student Center. Dr. Matthew Zart, assistant professor of chemistry, will present Metalloenzymes: The Inspiration for Synthetic Small Molecules containing Hydrogen-Bonding Networks. The society meets most Friday afternoons during the academic year for presentations by a colleague in an informal, convivial setting. Beverages and snacks are available.

German Film Series — The next film in the German Film Series Crossing Boundaries with German Film will be screened on Feb. 9 at 7:15 p.m. in WBC 116. Almanya: Welcome to Germany (2011) is a tragi-comedy that follows three generations of a German-Turkish immigrant family as they journey across intergenerational and cultural divides to shape, understand, and affirm their identity. Free admission. Open to the public. 
 

River Crossing: Storytelling & Interfaith Leadership Conference – Loras College in Dubuque is hosting a one-day interfaith conference on Saturday, Feb. 20. If you’re interested in attending with a group from Wartburg, contact Pastor Ramona.

Submissions for Knightline — send in your news/events for the next edition of Knightline, our monthly e-newsletter that goes out to Wartburg alumni, parents and friends. The February edition will be going out on Thursday, Feb. 4. Please complete the “Knightline Submission Form” (click here) by the end of the day Monday, Feb. 1.

Volunteer for NCAA Championships — Interested in volunteering at the National Outdoor Track and Field Championships that Wartburg is hosting May 26-28? Registration is now open; click here to register by March 1 to be guaranteed a t-shirt. 

Hoverboard safety — The college’s safety committee is looking into the safety of hoverboards, especially in context of recent hoverboard battery fires nationwide. Currently, there is no ban for outdoor use at Wartburg College. However, those with hoverboards must not overcharge them and never leave them unattended while charging. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a federal agency with jurisdiction over product safety, is currently investigating hoverboard safety; see details online. If the college changes its policy on hoverboards as we learn more about the risks involved, we will inform the campus community. 

Water to Thrive dinner — Wartburg College Water to Thrive is hosting an all-you-can-eat pancake dinner on Friday, Feb. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Parish Hall in Waverly. A free-will donation will be collected; all proceeds will fund a freshwater well in rural Africa. Email wtt@wartburg.edu with questions.

New enrollment reports posted — The Office of Enrollment Management has posted the Winter Enrollment Report and Fall-to-Winter Retention Report on the InfoCenter website under the "Reports" tab; click here to view. In addition to what's been done in past reports, a new report has been developed for the Historical Summary of Majors. This report can be filtered by major/minor, academic year and academic department. If you have questions, contact Edie Waldstein or Fred Ribich.

Silent auction fundraiser for Laura Tull Adams — The Wartburg Student Music Therapy Association will hold a silent auction Feb. 4-6 for 2014 alumna Laura Tull Adams. Laura is currently under critical care in Des Moines following an emergency C-section and diagnosis of acute necrosis of the pancreas. The silent auction will take place on our Facebook page beginning at 12 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4; all proceeds will go to Laura and her family. Some items will go to the highest bidder and others will be gifted by the highest bidder to Laura. Winter professional development — Join us for an upbeat, engaging session focused on who you are, who you want to be, and how you can find increased joy and energy through tapping into your unique, most powerful ways to lead and serve. PROFESSIONAL NOTES

Jill Westen, information literacy librarian, published the article “Music without Borders: Loaning out World Music Instruments to Expand Patron Horizons” in American Libraries. The article highlights the World Music Instrument Collection at Vogel Library.

Dr. Kunihiko Terasawa, assistant professor of world religions, made a statement on tolerance and dialogue against Islamophobia at the interfaith prayer meeting at the Islamic Center in Waterloo on Jan. 31 as part of Cedar Valley Interfaith Councils.

Professor Kim Folkers facilitated a workshop in Mason City Jan. 9 for members of the Healthy Harvest of North Iowa organization. "Planning to Grow" focused on the power of marketing and a marketing plan to help local growers expand their own businesses.
