NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS 

MLK Jr. Day class schedule — Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Wartburg alters the class schedule on this federal holiday to free students and faculty to participate in afternoon service projects. Class periods one through six will meet for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between each. Weekday Chapel will not be held. Evening classes will meet at their regularly scheduled time. Period 1 (regularly starting at 7:45 a.m.) will be 7:45-8:35 a.m. Period 2 (9 a.m.) will be 8:45-9:35 a.m. Period 3 (10:45 a.m.) will be 9:45-10:35 a.m. Period 4 (noon) will be 10:45-11:35 a.m. Period 5 (1:15 p.m.) will be 11:45 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. Period 6 (2:30 p.m.) will be 12:45-1:35 p.m.

Recipes from Home — Alumni, students, staff and faculty are encouraged to share favorite recipes from home to be considered from the 2015-16 Mensa menu. Please email recipes for entrees, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides and desserts to Shelly Geweke, Dining Services nutrition and services advisor, or drop them in the Mensa suggestion box by Monday, Jan. 25. Include your name and contact information. The recipes that are chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa and the student body will vote for their favorites. Dishes that receive good feedback will be considered for next year's Mensa menu. 

Plastic Music — ETK presents Plastic Musik Tuesday, Jan. 19, 8 p.m., Neumann Auditorium. From Mozart to Motown, Plastic Musik puts a radical twist on the greatest hits of our time. Unassumingly armed with boom whackers, buckets, and kiddie pools, they attack profound compositions with scores of energy. 

Thank a mentor for National Mentoring Month – January is National Mentoring Month. At Wartburg, we recognize the value of mentors in our lives. Recognize a mentor by filling out the “Thank a Mentor” formhere until noon on Monday, Jan. 25. Mentors will receive electronic recognition in the afternoon. Leadership and Service Award nomination — Forms are now available and are due Friday, Feb. 12. Click here to nominate someone for one or more of the following awards: Nobility Award, Outstanding Organization, Outstanding International Senior, Dell Awards for Peace and Justice, Outstanding Organization Service Award, Outstanding Organization Advisor Award, John O. Waverly Health Center Volunteering — Students who want to begin the volunteering phase of the Waverly Health Center program must sign up for the orientation, which will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20. Contact Jo Dorrance, internship coordinator, in Student Life Office #184. This is for students beginning the program only, not for those already volunteering/shadowing. 

Phil and Lit — The first Winter Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Friday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West in Saemann Student Center. Dr. Erika Lindgren, associate professor of history, will present Medieval Monasticism in the Scottish Islands. The society meets most Friday afternoons during the academic year for presentations by a colleague in an informal, convivial setting. Beverages and snacks are available.

Candlelight Dinner — Sign-up for the V-Day campaign's Candlelight Dinner will be Wednesday, Jan. 20, and Thursday, Jan. 21, 5:15-7 p.m. in Mensa. The V-Day campaign will discuss its organization while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 6:30 p.m., in the Heritage Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. The cost for students with a board plan is $2, which may be paid with points or cash at the time of sign up. Off-board cost is $10 at the time of sign-up. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.

Social Work trivia — The Social Work Club will host its first meeting of the semester on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. in Old Main 200. Come join us for a night of social work trivia and prizes. Everyone is welcome. For questions, please contact abigail.schaper@wartburg.edu.

Crossing Boundaries with German Film  — The German film series Crossing Boundaries with German Film continues with the presentation of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 7:15 p.m. in WBC 116. The film presents the world of Sophie Scholl and other members of the "White Rose" student resistance movement in Hitler’s Germany. Free admission. Open to the public.

Unified Sports Day — Unified Sports Day will be Saturday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in The W's Hoover Fieldhouse. Sign up to volunteer on the following dates: Wednesday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Center (north entrance) and 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader (Hall of Champions); and Thursday, Jan. 21, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. in the Student Center (north entrance). University of Iowa Bridge ProgramThe University of Iowa College of Law is hosting “The Bridge Program," designed to introduce students of color to law school, in Iowa City on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and Wednesday, Feb. 20. Throughout the two-day program, students learn what it’s like to be a law student and factors law schools consider in applications. The College of Law will cover most of the travel expenditures, including hotel rooms and travel cost. For more information on attending, contact Karen Thalacker, pre-law advisor.

Study abroad applications — Set yourself apart, study abroad. Learn in a diverse setting, gain language skills, flexibility, and independence. Start your adventure by submitting your application for the 2016-17 year by Feb. 1.

Student Body leadership — Become the next Student Body president or vice president, treasurer, or recorder for 2016-17! No prior Senate experience is required, so all students are encouraged to apply. Fill out the application online by Friday, Jan. 29. Contact senate@wartburg.edu with questions.

Live in the Res next year — The Residence is a living and learning environment in which residents come together as a group to identify and meet a need in the community. Each group member will be expected to spend 6-10 hours each month serving with a community partner. Now is the time to start forming your group of eight and your project idea to come live in the Res next fall! Applications will be available Feb. 1 and are due Feb. 26. Presentations for group projects will be March 7 and 9.
