Presidential forum series — The third presidential forum, designed to be an exchange of information across campus, will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Hagemann Castle Room of Saemann Student Center. The one-hour forum series affords opportunities to explore timely topics and provide an occasion for employees to continue bringing forth expense-saving and revenue-enhancing ideas.

HLC feedback — As we prepare for our 2016-17 reaffirmation of accreditation, we ask for your feedback on the assurance argument draft. The draft and associated evidence are posted at this link, and an online feedback form is located here.

Saint Elizabeth Week survey — The Wartburg Volunteer Action Center would like feedback on the events offered during St. Elizabeth Week. Click here to take the survey.

Strategic Initiative Fund proposals due — The deadline is noon Friday, Dec. 11, for proposals to request Strategic Initiative Fund grant money. Requests for proposals are being accepted for all six goals of the Strategic Plan, with preference given to initiatives that enhance student recruitment and retention efforts. The suggested maximum award is $5,000 for projects. For details, click here or refer to your Nov. 20 email on behalf of the Mission Effectiveness Committee. Faculty and staff may submit proposals by emailing a copy to Janeen Stewart at janeen.stewart@wartburg.edu.

Budget document available — A document that compiles faculty and staff ideas for reducing costs and enhancing revenues is now posted on the InfoCenter under the tab for President’s Reports at http://info.wartburg.edu/Reports/Presidents-Reports.aspx. These ideas were generated from the faculty/staff workshop, presidential forums, PBAC survey, suggestion box, and department/office feedback. The President’s Cabinet, in collaboration with the President’s Budget Advisory Committee, will take these ideas into consideration during budget deliberations.

Catholic Mass  — Catholic Knights will offer Mass Thursday, Dec. 10 , 9 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel.

Urban studies in Des Moines — Wartburg expects to launch a new urban studies program in Des Moines beginning with Fall Term 2016. Students will complete an internship in their major and blended course work. Area businesses will work with the college to provide affordable housing. There will be an informational forum for students interested in learning more on Monday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in McCoy East.

Retirement reception for Gloria Campbell — Join the Department of Business Administration, Accounting, and Economics staff in honoring Gloria Campbell, associate professor of Business Administration/Economics, for her service to the college. A reception will be Wednesday, Dec. 9, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in WBC 100. Assorted goodies will be shared.

Candlelight Vespers — Wartburg students, faculty, staff, and friends are invited to Candlelight Vespers on Sunday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m., in the Wartburg Chapel. The service will include the singing of traditional carols and the lighting of candles. Pastor Ramona Bouzard will give the homily. The Wartburg Flute Choir, Dr. Karen Black, Psalm 149 dance group, and student vocalists will provide music.

Phil and Lit — Christian Terry '16, will present Gender in the Panopticon; and Andrew Tubbs '16 will present Cripface: Disability Narratives in Sound, for the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society Friday, Dec. 11, 4 p.m., in McCoy West of Saemann Student Center. Stocking filled with treats — Send a Christmas stocking filled with treats to a friend, roommate, or someone special for $3. The stockings, a fundraiser for the Sociology/Criminology Club, will be delivered to recipients' mailboxes during finals week. Contact Kaila Beavers at kaila.beavers@wartburg.edu by Friday, Dec. 11, with the recipient's name, mailbox number, and a message to go along with the stocking.

Sign up for swim meet — The W is hosting a free community swim meet Saturday, Dec. 12. Warm-ups will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the meet starting at 8. (There will be no lap swim this day.) All events — including individual and relays in men's, women's, and co-ed categories — are open to the community. If you are interested in a relay race, you must form your own team. Participants must be 13 or older and have previous swim team experience. Click here to register. Attention all low brass enthusiasts — You are invited to join the Jingle Jangle Brass Choir, under the direction of Dr. Craig Hancock, director of bands. The JJBC was formed in 2014 to have fun making live music while raising money for charities during the holiday season. All ages and ability levels are welcome for these ad hoc performances. The group's first appearance will be at the Christmas on Main celebration Thursday, Dec. 10, 6-8 p.m. For more information, contact craig.hancock@wartburg.edu.

United Way Campaign — The Wartburg Campaign Team thanks everyone who has made a contribution to the local United Way through Wartburg’s benefits sign-up process, pledge cards, and online donations. Retirement reception for Pamela Madden and Eileen Myers — Celebrate with the Vogel Library staff in honoring Pamela Madden, cataloging librarian, and Eileen Myers, access services supervisor, for their retirement reception Thursday, Dec. 17, 10-11:30 a.m., on the third floor of the library. Light refreshments will be provided. 

Student Watch survey — Thank you to the more than 700 students who participated in the Student Watch survey in mid-October. The participating students who won the prize drawing are: $50 to Kristie Sommer, and $25 each to Nicole Johnson, Jason Brescia, Carter O’Brien, Benjamin Banser, Autumn Gare, and Allison Hiestand.

PROFESSIONAL NOTES

Dr. Walter (Chip) Bouzard was a panelist at the Anglican Association of Biblical Scholars in Atlanta, Georgia, on Nov. 20. The topic was Anglican and Lutheran views on the authority and use of Scripture.

The Rev. Ramona Bouzard, dean of the Chapel, served as preacher for the Eucharist service held at the Anglican Association of Biblical Scholars in Atlanta, Georgia, Nov. 20.

Drs. Eric Merten and David McCullough of the biology department have published the article Range expansion of the invasive rusty crayfish Orconectes rusticus (Girard, 1852) (Decapoda: Astacoidea) in northeast Iowa (USA) rivers in the Journal of Crustacean Biology. Mauricio Leon '15 is first author and Audrey Cooper '16 and Leander Scott '17 are coauthors along with three UNI collaborators.
