NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Celebrate Saint Elizabeth Week —  Participate in community activism and service during Saint Elizabeth Week, Nov. 14-20. Organized by the Volunteer Action Center, the week will include activities — developed by student organizations — that focus on efforts to alleviate hunger and homelessness. A launch event featuring live music will be Saturday, Nov. 14, 6-8 p.m., in Cardinal Commons. New this year will be a Bread Night in the residence hall kitchens Sunday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m., where students will get bread samples and learn more about the week's events. Day of Silence — SAFE and Alliance will hold a Day of Silence and RemembranceTuesday, Nov. 10 to promote suicide awareness. They encourage everyone to participate by wearing all black. All are invited to come and go from a discussion from 8 to 10 p.m. in Grossmann 132. Contact safe@wartburg.edu with questions. 

Presidential forum — The notes from the Presidential Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 21, are now available on the President's Report page of the InfoCenter.  

Retirement incentive update — Twenty-five eligible individuals elected to participate in the college's retirement incentive program, including six faculty and 19 staff members. As is the normal practice for retiring individuals, we respect their choice to share that information as they deem appropriate. Department heads and direct supervisors will be notified so they can appropriately plan for the future. A few of the retirements will take place in December, while most are planned for April or May. Some of the positions held by faculty are included in the list of 12 faculty positions identified as having seriously diminished need during the institutional need review process and are recommended for elimination. All staff positions will be evaluated during the expense review process. The review process will also determine which positions with scheduled retirements will be filled, eliminated, or reorganized within an area. Updates on position statuses will begin in January.
  

Davis Projects for Peace — An informational meeting about the Davis Projects for Peace Award will be Monday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m., in McCoy East. The $10,000 award is available for peace projects proposed by undergraduate students. The projects must be completed during the summer of 2016. Final proposals are due Wednesday, Jan. 13, by noon, to Dr. Dan Kittle, dean of students. Learn more about Wartburg West — Bonita Bock, Wartburg West co-director, will host an informational meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7 p.m., in McCoy West. For more information, contact Jo Dorrance, internship coordinator and Wartburg West liaison, at jo.dorrance@wartburg.edu.

Sip & Paint  — Entertainment ToKnight  will host a Sip & Paint event Thursday, Nov. 12, 7-10 p.m., in Knights Ballroom. Sign up outside of ETK's office window or on the door. Walk-ins will be accepted. Beverages and all materials will be provided.

Candlelight dinner — Sign up for a candlelight dinner hosted by Phi Eta Sigma Nov. 11 and Nov. 12, 5:15-7 p.m. in Mensa. PES will discuss its organization over dinner Wednesday, Nov. 18, 6:30 p.m., in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. The cost for students with a board plan is $2. This may be paid with points, declining balance, or cash. Off-board students may also attend for $10. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.

Audition for The Vagina Monologues — The Vagina Monologues auditions will be Wednesday, Nov.11 and Thursday, Nov. 12, 7-9 p.m., Vogel Library 353. Auditions will be 15 minutes long and include a short reading from one of the monologues as well as a casual interview with the student directors. No preparation is needed for the audition, and all Wartburg women can audition. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the Registrar's Office. The Ama(th)zing Race — The Department of Math, Computer Science & Physics is hosting The Ama(th)zing Race Friday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m., in Science Center Room 247. Students can compete in feats of mathematical skill against other groups to win "Math Culture Points." For more information, email mcsp@wartburg.edu.

Making It Matter Food Drive — Students, faculty, and staff who bring a nonperishable item to The Wartburg Store Nov. 2-24 will receive a coupon for 20 percent off one apparel or gift item. Items collected will be donated to the Vineyard Community Church food bank and Cedar Valley Friends of the Family. Details about a faculty competition will be forthcoming. The food drive is sponsored by the Black Student Union and The Wartburg Store. For more information, contact Krystal Madlock at krystal.madlock@wartburg.edu.

Service award nominations — Applications are due Friday, Nov. 13, for two awards to be bestowed during Saint Elizabeth Week, Nov. 14-20. Nominate a student for the St. Elizabeth Award for Service and a faculty or staff member for the Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service. Recipients will be recognized during chapel Wednesday, Nov. 18. Click here for a nomination form. 

Catholic Mass  — Catholic Knights will offer Mass Thursday, Nov. 12 , 9 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel.

Pizza fundraiser — Dance Marathon will host an all-day fundraiser at Pizza Hut Wednesday, Nov. 11. A voucher, which can be found on the organization's Facebook page, must be printed and presented when paying.

New art exhibit — The work of Chawne Paige, a Waterloo Center for the Arts curator, will be featured in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery through Friday, Dec. 18. B|W+MOD is open daily 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Click here for more information.   

Bach's Lunch — Brett Wolgast, cantor at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, will be the Bach's Lunch guest artist Friday, Nov. 13, 12:30 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel. The performance will be preceded by a noon lunch and explanation of the performance in Chapel Commons. Attendees are invited to bring a lunch or order one from the Den by Wednesday, Sept. 9, by contacting Marcia Haugen, music department office coordinator, at marcia.haugen@wartburg.edu.   

Knightliters concerts — The Knightliters Jazz Band will perform a free concert Saturday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceuem. Click here for more information. 

Festival of Trees — If your student organization wants to be a part of the annual Wartburg Community Festival of Trees, the deadline to register is Monday, Nov. 30. The festival will be Dec. 2-17. Click here for more information. 

Phil and Lit — Dr. Zak Montgomery, associate professor of Spanish, will present Exploring the Cultural and Linguistic Identity Development of Dual Language Learnersfor the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society Friday, Nov. 13, 4 p.m., in McCoy West.

Keep on Learning — A team of Wartburg College faculty and staff will lead conversations about The Other Wes Moore during the November Keep on Learning Thursday', Nov. 12, 19 and Dec. 3, 9:30-11:30 a.m., in the Heritage Room. The Other Wes Moore, which chronicles the very different paths of two young black men growing up in Baltimore, was selected as this year’s common reading for all incoming students. The first class of each session is free; a $30 fee due at the second session covers the remainder of the course. For more information,click here

Faculty, students attend Parliament of World Religions — Rachel Perkins '18, Ashley Dahl '18, Madelyn Carlson '17, Alison Leonhart '16, Jessa McAvoy '16, and Meghan Parman '16 recently attended the Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City. Bonita and Nelson Bock, Wartburg West co-directors, and Dr. Jennifer McBride, assistant professor of religion, accompanied the students. More than 10,000 people from 80 countries representing 50 religions attended the event, which included hundreds of plenary sessions and workshops.

May Term course opportunity — EN 244 01 Young Adult Literature will be offered on campus during May Term 2016. It will no longer be offered at Wartburg West. The course meets from 9 a.m. to noon with Dr. Lizbeth Gehring, assistant professor of English education . Interested students should bring a drop/add card signed by their academic adviser to the Registrar's Office. This course meets a humanities/fine arts requirement, and no fees are attached to this course.
