PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Recycling progress demonstrated
— The Sustainability Office reports garbage collection has decreased and recycling has significantly increased through the adoption of changes to the waste management process implemented in 2014. The percentage of items recycled has doubled year over year, according to measurements taken in February and March against 2014 benchmarks. This academic year, Wartburg will save $9,315 by reducing its garbage collection services by 36 cubic yards per week. Yet, work remains: the college's goal is to divert 80 percent of materials by 2020. This year, the Sustainability Office will focus on educating students about recycling in the residence halls. Recycling costs the college 75 percent less than sending items to a landfill. With questions, email Anne Duncan, sustainability coordinator, at anne.duncan@wartburg.edu.

Estate donates $500,000
— A friendship that began in graduate school has resulted in a $500,000 gift for the Transforming Tomorrow campaign. The funds will support student scholarships and grow the endowment—two priorities of the $75 million comprehensive campaign. The gift was made possible through the estate of Sanford “Sandy” Moss, who had established a charitable fund with Harold Kurtz, a 1958 Wartburg graduate, and Grace Jahn Kurtz, a 1961 graduate, as trustees. Click here to read more.

State fair success
— Thanks to those who helped run Wartburg's booth at the Iowa State Fair. Sixty-one students, faculty, staff, and alumni combined to volunteer 495 hours and give out more than 17,000 Wartburg wristbands, 3,000 bags, and a significant amount of recruitment materials.

Alumni Board election
— Barbara Gamez Sims '98 is the new president of the Wartburg College Alumni Board. Thomas Buchheim '93 is the new president-elect. New members include Gerald Oberheu '62, Mark Hargrafen '99, Dr. Michael Franzman '00, and Natalie Gemberling '12. Click here to read more.
