NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

VP for Student Life open forums — The search committee for the vice president for student life and dean of student has selected three candidates to interview: Dr. Arthur Sunleaf, Dr. Daniel Kittle, and Dr. Daniel Dentino. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to the following open forums:

Sunleaf - Monday, May 18, 3 p.m., WBC 214 (Buckmaster)
Kittle - Tuesday, May 19, 3 p.m., WBC 214 (Buckmaster)
Dentino - Wednesday, May 20, 3 p.m., WBC 214 (Buckmaster)

Feedback on the candidates and their qualifications for the position is due by noon the day after each interview. 


Gold star for sustainability
 — Wartburg is Iowa's first private institution to earn a Gold rating from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), the leading authority on sustainability in higher education. The college is the second private school in the Midwest and ninth in the nation to achieve the designation. STARS 2.0 ratings are based on scores in nearly 75 categories encompassing academics,
engagement, operations, and planning and administration. Learn more about the honor here.


Holiday calendar online 
— The 2015-16 holiday calendar is now available online.


CCE reception 
— Join the Center for Community Engagement in wishing Mandie Sanderman and Gail Sexton good luck and best wishes as they leave Wartburg. The CCE, on the second floor of Vogel Library, will host an informal reception open to all faculty, staff, and students, Thursday, May 21, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. 


New picnic tables 
— Have you noticed the new recycled plastic picnic tables on campus? Please thank Student Senate for authorizing the purchase and the volunteers (including representatives from Student Senate and the Earth Committee) for assembling them in time for May Term enjoyment. 


Students honored 
— Sho Kawashima ’15 and Nothizile Ncube ’17, both international relations majors, received peer reviewed honors at the 24th annual Midwest Political Science Undergraduate Research Conference, March 27-28, at Truman State University. Sho's research paper, The Environmental Effects of Foreign Direct Investment in Developing Countries: Time-lagged Analyses of CO2 Emissions and Ecological Footprint, received first place and Nothi's paper, The Impact of European Union Membership on Economic Development, received third place in Best Paper Awards. Dr. Richard Witmer, associate professor of political science at Creighton University, intends to publish the papers in the Journal of Political Research. The students are advised by Dr. Bret Billet, professor of political science. Their papers emanated from research conducted in Billet's PS302 International Relations course in fall 2014.


Holi Festival 
— The Asian Student Association is hosting a Holi Festival and  homemade Asian dinner Saturday, May 16. The festival, which includes splashing colorful powders, Henna tattoos, and several sports, begins at 2 p.m. behind The Manors. The dinner, which will honor the Nepalese earthquake victims, begins at 5 p.m. in the Knights Village lounge.


Surplus sale 
— Wartburg will sell used furniture, equipment, and supplies Friday, May 15, from noon to 7 p.m. The surplus sale will be at the Windy Acres barn on the corner of 12th Street Northwest and Seventh Avenue Northwest. Furniture items include wooden and upholstered chairs, desks, shelves, tables, and cubicles. Athletic equipment, dining equipment, and kitchen supplies also are available. Questions can be directed to Anne Duncan, sustainability coordinator, at anne.duncan@wartburg.edu.


FNB supports campaign 
— First National Bank has committed $25,000 to the college's Transforming Tomorrow campaign. Click here to learn more about the gift.


Professional development opportunity 
— Marketing & Communication Office staff will discuss the Worth It marketing initiative at the spring professional development event today, May 14, 2:30-4 p.m., in the Saemann Student Center ballroom. Graham Garner, vice president for marketing and communication, and Chris Knudson, director of creative strategy, will share how the initiative came about, advise how to communicate its themes, and explore what makes Wartburg "Worth It" for employees. Day of J
 benefit 
— A benefit Saturday, May 16, will raise funds to support Michael Jensen '96, professor of voice, as he undergoes chemotherapy and radiation to fight an inoperable brain tumor diagnosed in February. Hope Overflow will host Day of J on the campus mall starting at 1 p.m. It will feature music from Hope Overflow and Andrew Hoyt '17, a silent auction, a cake walk, games, face painting, and more. You also can donate and read updates through the Jensen family's online fundraising page and buy "Team Mike" T-shirts online.


Get muddy for a cause 
— SAFE's third annual Tough Knight Mud Run will be Saturday, May 16, at the Ingawanis Boy Scout Camp. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m. This 5K through the woods will present runners with numerous obstacles to test strength, stamina, and mental grit. Cost is $40 and registration is available online. Proceeds will go toward raising awareness for suicide prevention. 


Arthritis lunch 'n' learn 
— Leah Thier, a Waverly Health Center physical and occupational therapist, will present Movement as a Medicine for Arthritis Wednesday, May 20, noon-1 p.m., in The W's Wet Classroom. The free event is sponsored by The W and Waverly Health Center. Guests can bring a sack lunch or purchase something from the Zesty Orange.

— Residential Life is sponsoring an artistic dialogue on values. Today, May 14, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., enjoy refreshments while exploring the sidewalks and reflecting on the messages shared yesterday in sidewalk chalk on the campus mall.

Recognition breakfast — All faculty and staff are invited to Milestones, a year-end recognition event, Friday, May 22, in Knights Ballroom. A buffet breakfast will be served at 8 a.m., and the program will begin at 8:30 a.m. Recognition includes 33 anniversaries, 12 retirements, and achievements by faculty and staff. Drs. Wes Brooks and Amy Nolan will emcee the program, which will include door prizes.

Retirees include: Dr. Ronald Alexander, professor of philosophy and religion (1966-2014); Jim Aubrey, locksmith (1984-2014); Mary Dreesman, cleaning staff, maintenance (1984-2015); Vicki Edelnant, director, Pathways Center (1990-2014); John Haugen, assistant professor of accounting (1979-2015); Linda Hennings, circulation and reserves supervisor, Vogel Library (1997-2015); Marnie Hubbard, technical services associate, Vogel Library (1979-2015); Jan Hyde, dining services manager and student employment coordinator (1984-2015); Elaine Johnson, cleaning staff, maintenance (1990-2015); Betty Matthias, cook, dining services (2004-2015); Claude McDonald, plumber, maintenance (2003-2014); and Dr. Peggy Pruisner, professor of education (1992-2015).
