Host Information
Orange Connection - A Job Shadowing Program

What is the Orange Connection?

The Orange Connection is a career mentoring experience designed to allow you to connect and/or “shadow” with Wartburg alumni in the Chicago and Des Moines areas.  We call these career exploration mentors.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about a specific occupation or line of work you might be interested in.

You will travel over Winter Break with approximately 14 other students to Des Moines or Chicago to observe your mentor in their everyday work environment.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the knowledge, skills, talents, and level of education required for the job, as well as learn about the important responsibilities and tasks associated with your mentor's position.  While the purpose of the Orange Connection is to gather career-related information and expand your network, it also allows you to build your interviewing skills, become aware of trends in the field, and see workforce technologies in action.

Why should I participate in the Orange Connection program?

Participating in the Orange Connection will:

  • Help you discover information about potential majors and minors here at Wartburg.
  • Gain some essential insight on certain occupations and careers.
  • Allow you to experience what it's like to work in a large metropolitan area.
  • Provide you with tips on how to successfully balance your personal and professional life.
  • Connect with alumni and learn about how they have been impacted by their experiences at Wartburg.

What will it cost to participate in the program?

If accepted into the program, you will agree to pay a $50 Orange Connection programming fee.  This fee helps offset some of the costs associated with this program.  As a member of the program, all lodging and most meals will be provided during the trip.  If the student participant withdraws from the program, the student will be charged a withdrawal fee of $100.  This information will be discussed in greater detail during the pre-departure preparatory meetings.

Where will I stay during my Orange Connection?

Depending on where you go for your Orange Connection, you may stay with a local alumnus/a in the Des Moines or Chicago area.  Though most participants will stay with the Program Coordinators in a hotel or rental property nearby the placement locations.  Those who do stay with an alumnus/a will benefit from reminiscing conversations and the feel of what it is like to live and work in a major metropolitan area.

How do I apply to participate in the program?
